Did anyone in the Boston area manage to catch Finbar Furey at Mr. Dooley’s downtown? He made a surprise appearance there on Sunday night. A Celtic show made an announcement that something special was going to happen, but couldn’t divulge what it would be. I was lucky enough to get the inside info from a friend, as to what the surprise was.
A group of musicians/friends of Finbar showed up, in addition to the musicians who regularly play at Dooley’s. Unfortunately, much of the crowd there was unintersted in music, and it was so noisy that the musicians couldn’t even hear eachother (there was no amplification). Things got better later on when the crowd thinned out and those who wanted to hear the music could shush eveyone down. The most memorable moment was Finbar playing the Lonesome Boatman on the low whistle (he abondoned the pipes, as they were just weren’t loud enough, not to mention, there was another piper there).
To make the evening even more special, Dooley’s sold thier 1 millionth pint of Guinness that night!
