Hey people!
I’m trying to decide what kind of whistle(s) I should get next. So I thought I’d “poll the audience.”
Would ya’ll mind telling me about your favorite whistle(s)?
Hey people!
I’m trying to decide what kind of whistle(s) I should get next. So I thought I’d “poll the audience.”
Would ya’ll mind telling me about your favorite whistle(s)?
Whistles I own…Abell D, CopelandD/C Generations Clares,Sindt,Burkes in brass & Comosite, Clarkes Sweetheart D/C,
the ones I play every day are the Burkes Composite and an old beat up Clarke
Favorites right now are the Abell D and Burke Bb composite and a Clarke Tweeked D.
Have: Clarke’s Original and Sweetone D, Walton’s D, Gen D nickel and brass, Feadog D, Dixon tunable D (high and low), Burke’s AlPro D and Brass Pro Session D.
I never quite know whether it’s the brass or the Al Pro Burke that’s my fave. I play both of them ALL THE TIME, and currently like the brass ~ but boy, those AlPro high notes sing…
Mary
Soprano-O’Grady with a tweaked Walton’s Little Black fipple (sticky tac in mouthpiece cavity)
Low-slightly tweaked Kerry Low D (extra teflon tape under mouthpiece to reduce the buzz)
Joe
Laughing whistle and nontunable Dixon D. But the laughing is the most costly one I have.
I have several High D whistles:
There is somethings I like about each whistle but there is also enough I dislike about each whistle to keep it from becoming a “favourite”. Maybe I’m just too choosy?
FWIW, the next whistles I am going to get are:
I spent over an hour reclined in the hammock yesterday, playing my Hoover narrow bore sop D. I may not do this every day, but when time and weather permits, I don’t have to worry about annoying the neighbors. The birds perch close to check me out. I’m waiting for the local mockingbirds to start sounding more Irish.

I’m going to Mack’s shop in late May and I fully intend to come out with at least one whistle! Wonder how many hours I should allot - it will be on my way (sort of) to Idaho.
My favorite whistles in preferred order:
Overton Low-D
Dixon tunable Regular-D
Overton Low-F
Dixon tunable regular-C
Burke Narrow Bore Composit Reg-D
Overton Middle-A (mezzo-soprano).
I also have a Dixon 3 piece Irish flute that gets regular play.

P.S. I own a number of other whistles including a dozen sweet-tones, an extra Dixon tunable D, waltons, Guiness, feadog, a couple of tunable chieftains (D&G), shaw(G), and susatos (D,C,Bb), a Burke EZ Low-d Composite.

Dixon D and Clarke tweaked D are by far my favorites.
Anything by Mack Hoover and Mike Burke. They compliment each other, very well…
Cheers.

I have the following: Walton D; Feadog D; Generation G, Bb, D; Clarke Sweetone D, Shaw D, Susato D/C/Bb, Low D; Oak D; Clarke Original 3 Ds, C; Tweaked Clarke; Copeland D; Hoover Narrow Bore D…I think that’s all of 'em…but my favorites are definitely the Copeland and my old Clarke that has a big dent and all the paint rubbed off around the mouthpiece and finger holes. It is like a best friend to me…we understand each other. ![]()
…marilyn…
Of the many I own, I’m only passionate about my Dixon tunable soprano D. Honorable mention goes to my Sweetone D, and third place to my Feadog D.
I have a loan of an Overton low D and after a few days of playing this I now understand why its called the cosmic drainpipe
and it will be very hard to give it back.
Peace, Mike
Overton Hi D,
Feadog brass/green D
Gen Bb
I find I have a different favorite for different things.
For performing my Susato is no.1
For just plain playing, my Clarke is it,
And I still have a soft spot for my Feadog, which I learned on.
Considering the price, IMHO everyone should have at least one Sweetone in their collection. I have a ‘D’ and I really like it.
My current favorite is my Bb Water Weasel. For playing with others I have an Oak D and a Dixon D tunable that are both nice, but different.
I’m without an expensive high D right now (which is starting to bother me…), but
I’m waiting on high D’s from Mr. Rose and Mr. Grinter (should be here in May/June), so I assume that will cure me for a while.

My Oak high-D, definitely, with the mouthpiece twisted off and cork-greased to make it tuneable, it’s easily my favorite whistle.
I have also, susato vnb, clarke original, clarke sweetone, feadog, acorn, ‘guiness’ (walton’s), soodlum’s, a wooden whistle of dubious merits and provenance… okay, I don’t
have any high-end whistles, but I think I have and have tried most of the low end whistles, and every time time I come back to the Oak. Okay, sometimes I play one of the others for a few tunes, for variety, but not in public.
When I get a Mack Hoover, I’m
sure I’ll being playing that after midnight… and maybe, just maybe, all the time… it’ll be my first ‘high-end’ whistle. It may also be my last, since I’m increasingly becoming something of a metal-purist in my whistling. Other people can play wood whistles if they want, but give me my crisp metal tones… if I want wood, I’ll play the flute. ![]()
