What whistle do you play the most?

We haven’t done one of these for awhile and I thought it time to update our list. What whistle do you play the most and where? For me it’s a Gary Humphrey Retrofit Head on a Feadog body in the minivan at stoplights and waiting for the kids to get in the car when I pick them up from school. (that could be a bit too much info, but you know how we perfectionists can get-it’s in the details) So give me some details you guys.

Jon

My Overton low D. And for high whistles, my self tweaked Feadog.

it’s the feeling i get from her sweet, mellow and rich sound, the burke low D EZ

Yvon Le Coant Low D.

But I have to admit for a lot of cross-fippling with the Stratoflute (<----©Trisha 2004)

Kerry Pro low D, then Alba Bb

Clarke Sweetone natural finish.

Copeland low D (brass) and high D (nickel), usually either at home or at rehearsals or at gigs. most of the time I just play while I’m watching a movie, that way I get 2 hrs a day of practice and I see lots of movies too.

Whichever ones I haven’t sent out yet… most of the time I sorta hate to see them go, so I play them a lot before shipping.

A self tweaked Walton’s Mellow D…followed by a Bloomfield tweaked Susato D

this last month, a hoover pvc low f. really love the sound. something special about this whistle - as goldilocks would say, its just right.

My top three which all get about the same play time are:

Bb Water Weasel
high D Dixon
high D Oak body w/Gary’s Retro-Fit Head

-brett

Tweaked red-top Generation D, followed by a Sindog (Sindt head on Feadog D shaft), followed by blue anodized CG Overton Hi D, followed by CG Overton Mezzo A.

Primary Whistles and Frequency of use:

  • Usually played in every practice.
    • Overton Low-D
      Burke Reg-D session-composite
      Dixon D Flute (Conical 3pc)
      Get played often:
    • Overton Low-F
      Burke regular-d narrow bore composite.
      Get played occasionally:
    • Overton Mezzo-A
      Dixon Reg-D w/brass tuning
      Dixon Tunable-C

Silkstone PVC Green D
Hoover Whitecap D on Acorn body
Sweetone D (in the car)

It has just changed. I now play my one piece Nickel Clare D completely un-tweaked more than the others. It is followed closely by my Feadan D which appears to be very similar to the Clare, perhaps an ancestor. The others most often played are a self tweaked Feadog D and a self tweaked Gen D. The others get played when I feel like it. I usually play at my computer desk in my office/den/family room/spare bedroom.

I really like this Clare. It is easy to play in the first and second octave and even into the 3rd octave. I think I will order an Oak D since so many have commented on the sound of the Oak.

Keep whistling
Ron

  1. Gen D brass tube with a Hoover whitecap mouthpiece
  2. Dixon high D (brass tuning slide)
  3. Sindt D that I’ve had only two weeks and I am still getting used to. Playing it is really no harder than the other two, although it’s different. I am mostly getting used to the increased weight and different balance point. BTW, I surfed into a TV program featuring the Chieftans last week and they did a close-up of Paddy Moloney pulling out a Sindt. It sounded great when he played it.

Generation Nickel Bb

Hoover Whitecap on a Gen brass tube until…
Burke Brass Session Pro D I just got a week ago.
Hoover whitecap on a Gen Bb nickel tube

The most would be my Sindt D, followed by my Sindt A (thank you Andrea)for slow stuff.

I play both in the bedroom each day for practice and twice a week in session.

I also have a Dixon tunable D with brass tuning slide that stays in my jacket pocket for those times when I’m out and about and find a nice spot to play.

But there is a new whistle on the horizon and wouldn’t you love to know what it is? Guess you’ll have to wait until the next time this question rolls around.

Mike

My beloved Abell Madagascar Rosewood d.

I wonder how many times I have types the above phrase. I have the same answer every time this question is asked.

But actually, I mostly play flute.
