We haven’t done one of these for awhile and I thought it time to update our list. What whistle do you play the most and where? For me it’s a Gary Humphrey Retrofit Head on a Feadog body in the minivan at stoplights and waiting for the kids to get in the car when I pick them up from school. (that could be a bit too much info, but you know how we perfectionists can get-it’s in the details) So give me some details you guys.
Copeland low D (brass) and high D (nickel), usually either at home or at rehearsals or at gigs. most of the time I just play while I’m watching a movie, that way I get 2 hrs a day of practice and I see lots of movies too.
Tweaked red-top Generation D, followed by a Sindog (Sindt head on Feadog D shaft), followed by blue anodized CG Overton Hi D, followed by CG Overton Mezzo A.
It has just changed. I now play my one piece Nickel Clare D completely un-tweaked more than the others. It is followed closely by my Feadan D which appears to be very similar to the Clare, perhaps an ancestor. The others most often played are a self tweaked Feadog D and a self tweaked Gen D. The others get played when I feel like it. I usually play at my computer desk in my office/den/family room/spare bedroom.
I really like this Clare. It is easy to play in the first and second octave and even into the 3rd octave. I think I will order an Oak D since so many have commented on the sound of the Oak.
Gen D brass tube with a Hoover whitecap mouthpiece
Dixon high D (brass tuning slide)
Sindt D that I’ve had only two weeks and I am still getting used to. Playing it is really no harder than the other two, although it’s different. I am mostly getting used to the increased weight and different balance point. BTW, I surfed into a TV program featuring the Chieftans last week and they did a close-up of Paddy Moloney pulling out a Sindt. It sounded great when he played it.

The most would be my Sindt D, followed by my Sindt A (thank you Andrea)for slow stuff.
I play both in the bedroom each day for practice and twice a week in session.
I also have a Dixon tunable D with brass tuning slide that stays in my jacket pocket for those times when I’m out and about and find a nice spot to play.
But there is a new whistle on the horizon and wouldn’t you love to know what it is? Guess you’ll have to wait until the next time this question rolls around.
