I thought that it would be interesting to hear what people’s favorite piping tunes are (Jig, Reel, Hornpipe, planxty), whether you play them or not. Anyone couragous enough to volunteer? I feel that mine often change with time.
Right now for me:
Jim Wards (Jig - doesn’t change for me easily- makes me feel like riding a horse in full gallop in an open feild without fences)
Bucks of Oranmore (Reel - really woops up the room eh!)) Maid behind the bar a close second
Bees Wing (Hornpipe-recent fav) Merrily Kiss the Quaker’s wife and Cronnins are past favs
Pleasure of hope (planxty-I think); always love O’Carolins Concerto though which starts similarly
My favourite is any tune I can manage to play through without forgetting it.
One that surprised me recently, was a fiddle tune I heard played - The Flowers of Edinburgh played relatively slowly and sparsely ornamented on a C chanter, it sounded lovely that way.
Jigs: Lark in the morning, Out on the ocean, Rose in the heather, Behind the bush in the garden, Farewell to my troubles
Slip jigs: Drops of Brandy, Hardiman the fiddler
Hornpipes: Cuckoo’s nest (1st version in G and D, & 2nd version in Em);
Delahunty’s hornpipe (many know it by another name which escapes me now), Pidgeon on the gate
Reels: Barrow burn reel, Martin Rochford’s, I’;m not really playing a lot of reels these days + I dont know why..just not intersted I guess…
Other’s: Spanish Cloak, Paddy’s green shamrock shores, Give me your hand, Green grow the laurels.
No surprises, I suppose.. all pretty standard fare…
