Emer Mayock Website

I’m a giant fan of the hugely talented (Flute, Whistle, U-Pipes, Fiddle, Cello, and who knows what else) Emer Mayock. For those unfamiliar with her wonderful flute playing, she now has a website up with sound clips from her two solo CD’s “Merry Bits of Timber” and “Playground”, check it out: http://www.emermayock.com/

Boy do I miss my flute…

Cheers,

Loren

Very impressive.

Her group, Afro Celts, is also going on tour. Due at the Santa Monica Pier, Calif., on July 10th, and FREE!

Yup, she’s touring with AfroCelts go see 'em if you get the chance - very cool group indeed

I thought she played a Rudall original flute, but I saw the photo of her and I can’t tell what flute she plays. Any idea?

Clearly Rudall copy or Rudall like. I wouln not be surprised if it was a Grinter–so responsive.

Loren, so what is the latest tales of “the Man and his Dog?” Pray tell. where are you?

I thought she was playing a Sam Murray flute. I believe she thanks him in her liner notes, and the photos on her website look like one (note the flare around the socket of the barrel). And I really like her playing.

Kevin Krell

Yes, unless there has been a recent chance, Emer plays a Sam Murray flute. (Interesting side note: the Irish Player I sold my Olwell to said it plays much like his keyless Murray.)

Emer also plays Overton whistles.

G., I’m still in Boulder, but I’m sorry to say the story has taken a sad turn: My Dog Gunner (my best friend in the world) is very ill and has deteriorated rather rapidly over the last week or so: At the moment he can barely walk - even standing up is difficult for him right now. I’ve had him on medication for the last 5 days, but his condition continues to worsen daily. It’s starting to look like this is where his journey will end… :sniffle:

If you have the chance during the current tour to see The Afro Celts (formerly Afro Celt Sound System), you’ll get a good opportunity to see Emer Mayock playing uillean pipes, whistle, fiddle, and definitely… FLUTE. They just opened their new CD tour in the U.S. at a free concert at the Santa Monica pier. OK, the Afro Celts CDs are definitely not Irish Trad music (although her 2 solo CDs have quite a bit of trad and plenty of her own compositions). Still an enjoyable concert experience, and you can clearly see and hear what a pro she is!

Afro Celts are playing here in Boulder on the 21st of this month, so I’m trying to get a ticket - should be a great show!

Has anyone heard the new Afro Celts CD, I haven’t had the opportunity and am wondering what it’s like - each CD has been different from the one before…

Loren

I’ve only heard the live performance of tunes from the CD. It’s not really my music. BTW, they’ve added electric bass and a drum kit, like they needed a bigger rhythm section!

Kevin Krell

Saw Afro Celts live last night and, while i was a bit skeptical before hand, I’d say the drumkit and bass worked out just fine. The band are fantastic live.

I’m sorry to report (for all the flute fans) that there was no significant flute playing during the two hour show: Emer mostly U-Pipes, and whistle. She also played fiddle on a couple of tunes. She did pick up and play her flute twice, once for about a minute, and the other for about 2, however she couldn’t be heard either time I’m afraid.

Never the less, Emer was stunning on both UP and whistle, as wasJames McNally on whistle, and Bodhran. He also plays keyboards and guitar, of course. Each member of the band was impressive, in fact.

Anyway, fantastic show, even without flute playing

Loren

Ah, too bad. At the Santa Monica show, she was strong enough in the mix to be heard on all instruments, at least from the front. Mostly just bass around the side of the stage.

People might want to listen/watch the archive of Afro Celts KCRW July 19 performance. Good audio, and a chance to watch Emer playing live. Available through the Afro Celts website at http://www.afrocelts.com , or perhaps via more hunting on the KCRW site.
