Elfsong D

Just received my Elfsong D (Ruby). At first sight, it is a beautifully crafted instrument, and I really like its heft. Can’t play it bc. I am at work too (shhhh…), but I know I’ll spend this weekend with it…

You’re going to love it! I’ve had my Elfsong since just before Christmas, and the more I play it, the more I love it. Remember to warm it well before you play it…first by holding the head in your hands, then by blowing gently though it until the tube is noticeably warm…doing that will pretty much eliminate any clogging.

Redwolf,
Thanks for the advice, I will definitely follow it.

Lucky boy???

Groovy, Baby.

OK… It is Sunday morning, and I have hardly put the thing down. I might have slept with it, but I don’t think my wife would have appreciated. A few comments after a couple of days of playing the couple of tunes (!..) I know:

1-My first impression as to the looks of the instrument has not changed: it is beautiful and very well crafted.
2-It is substantially heavier than my Dixon D (PVC), and I see that as a plus. I actually do enjoy the weight and heft of it.
3-It is very responsive, even to the fingers of a beginner, which I definitely am. The switch between octaves is effortless, and the holes are very comfortable.
4-Soundwise, there is a difference between the lower and upper registers. The lower is quite warm and mellow, while the upper is a lot “flutier” (!!!) for lack of a better term. What I mean is it is breathy… Now, this may be the way the whistle sounds, or it may be the inexperience of the player (I’d appreciate feedback from other Elfsong owners, thanks very much), but it certainly isn’t something I mind at all.

All in all, I am really happy with it and I would recommend it very highly, particularly in this price range.

Mine tends to have the same tonal quality across both octaves, but whether this is a difference in playing style or a difference in the whistles (as Sandy notes on her site, they are all individuals) is difficult to say without playing yours. Just for grins and chuckles, you might try giving it just a tad more air in the second octave and see if anything changes. Not a lot mind…just tighten your lips a bit to focus the airstream.
