Still needs “Fettling” but why has he not sorted this out. The “natural” fittings would make it an awkward sale if it needs to pass through border controls

Hillman chanter…
PS I still have the Regents Park Piper prints for sale all proceeds go to the Lepers charity.
There’s a kinda scary boxwood chanter which has been “fettled” (or should I say buggered) to accept a different sort of reed than that for which it was originally intended.
I’ve seen one or two chanters which have had a short length of brass tubing (ID 5 mm) temporarily fitted. This acts as a reed seat for a reed with a brass tubing (OD 5mm). The advantage is that you can raise or lower the reed in the seat without having to mess with the binding. This is a very simple operation and can easily be reversed. This process is described in Tim Britton’s manuel on reedmaking.
The photos of the Hillman chanter don’t give a good view of the reed seat, so it’s difficult to say to what extent the chanter has been “modified”.
PJ is right. This adaptation is a harmless and easily reversible mod.
My Lynch chanter came like that from the shop as well - I just took the tubing out as I like to wrap my reed to fit the old fashioned way. No bother at all.
Thing is, if a drill was run through the throat of the chanter to accomodate the brass tubing, the original dimensions of the throat were ruined (one of the most critical parts of the chanter’s bore).
If it’s just in the reed seat area then maybe no harm was done… but who knows how far the drill was run in?
Scary to me still, that someone ran a drill through somebody else’s chanter.
Who mentioned anything about drilling?
The seller refers to Tim Britton who did some work on the chanter. Tim’s reedmaking manual refers to making an extension for reeds so they sit higher in the seat and play lower (i.e. closer to concert pitch). This doesn’t involve drilling.
I owned a Quinn chanter that had been previously been Brittonized. He had twisted a drill bit, by hand, down into the reed seat to accept the tubing. I don’t know if he still does that, though.
Yes, that is also my understanding - that the reed seat only and NOT the upper bore that is tweaked.
