The MacHarg practice set went for $430. Is that the deal I’m thinking it was? I couldn’t find any info on his UP chanters, but he has a good reputation when it comes to other chanter styles and of coarse his bags are well regarded.
My mental maximum was $525, but decided my bank account didn’t allow for it right now and didn’t place a bid. I’d like to give pipes a try and will probably end up with a Daye set unless something more attractive pops up in the coming months. It’s always fun to shop.
In retrospect I should have too.
I’d love to have made drones for it and sold the half set so some one could have bought a half set for a good bit less than 2G…
The set in question is by Doug Wilkinson and Glen McCarthy and appears to be an early model as sold via Hobgoblin as these had simpler mounts. The indicators for this are the oversize barrel section of the bass drone, just the blocks for the ‘c’ key. The Bass Drone Puck is Catalin but the chanter seems to have been mounted in a different imitation possibly ‘vigopas’ (maybe real) ivory
It will almost certainly be based on Rowsome design (measurements were given to them by AG) so if you buy it please note that it is NOT one of mine so do NOT turn up unannounced at my workshop expecting it to be sorted out.
The seller has been told so hopefully the auction details will be ammended
The Barrel drone
Several ‘modern’ makers use / have used barrel sections for the Bass drone e.g. Michael Cameron (London), Wilkinson & McCarthy, David Quinn, Bill Haneman, Mike Hulme as well as myself as have ‘historical’ ones e.g. Taylors, Brennan, Robert Reid, MacGregor, O’Mealy
Easrliest maker I can trace using this style of Bass Drone for UP’s is MacGregor (circa 1810-20) but the principle has been around much longer in the Phagotum, Shuttle Pipes, Musette du Cour, and woodwind such as the renaissance and Baroque Rackett
Thanks for the repeat heads up Big Davy! Ebay removed the original ad because I put in a link to my website. Obviously they are trying to corner the market. How can they succeed with Hakamdin Og O’Sialkot on their side
This would be the original chanter that goes with the half set also on Ebay at the moment. The chanter that is offered with the 1/2 set is by a different maker. It is a full size chanter NOT a practice chanter and the lady has been informed
The slim design is from measurements of a Taylor ‘square’ chanter that I gave them when they were starting out - instead of leaving the chanter normal thickness all the way down and sculpting the back d area they just took the diameter at the Eb and the the diameter at the back d and turned it accordingly
The 3/4 set which she had for sale has gone to the US
If bidding for either the half set or the chanter then ask for them to be wrapped securely as the set she sent to the US was not and arrived damaged
