E-Bay hacker

I was looking at the whistles on E-bay and I learned that someone has managed to change my password and e-mail address with E-bay. Now, I am not able to sign into E-bay. Presumably, the other person has access to my account now. I notified E-bay by e-mail, but didn’t get a responce yet.

I don’t think that this person can do me any real harm other than generating negative feedback for me on E-bay, but it makes me concerned about the security of other sites. What if it had been Paypal? I quickly changed my passward there just in case the hacker figures out my user name at Paypal.

I have never given my password to anyone and I’ve never written it down. Hackers still got into my e-bay account! This could be a good thing. Being locked out of E-bay will keep me from spending money there.

There seems to have been a rash of security breaches lately, at different sites. Scary. I’ve spent most of my years of internet usage with 1-2 passwords, but am now working on being more complicated. I’ve had a credit card usurped a couple years ago.

Dwight,

Same thing happened to me this past week:

Ebay “security” got back to me within an hour of my email reporting the problem. It might be worth sending them another message if they haven’t yet responded, especially if there are bogus listings running under your name. Ebay seems to be able to fix accounts that have been tampered with pretty quickly once they’re alerted.

Hope this helps.

Not to hijack this important thread–but if it weren’t for C&F I think I might go Luddite. I manage a small network at my office. (Not that I really know anything about it–It’s just that I know more than anybody else at my office). I have a network of two (2) computers at home. I have firewalls everywhere and I keep one of the better antiviral programs on every computer and I update regularly. I do the Windows updates. And yet, especially in the last year, I’m having to deal with hassles, mostly related to computer security and various Windows screw-ups, on an amazingly regular basis. (I can’t afford to buy a bunch of Macs. I’m thinking about Linux. Thanks.)

And spam just amazes the crap out of me. My ISP filters out tons of spam to my email addresses via Brightmail. Then they pass through my Spam Assassin program which catches lots. Then they pass through MessageFire, which catches lots. Then they get to my email client (Mozilla Thurderbird) which filters out lots. And still I get dozens a day. It’s enough to make me down some Vicodin and refinance some dead Nigerian dude’s private parts, making a neat $5,000,000 while I’m at it.
And what the heck is this sudden Vicodin craze?

E-bay finally resonded. It appears that someone had taken over my account and used it to sell things. E-bay has fixed the problem and I’m not being charged for the transactions I didn’t do.

On a slightly OT note- I’m keeping my office computers off the net from now on. All my patients have digital X-rays, etc. I’m not going to take any chances with a hacker getting into that.
