O.T. e-bay account hacked

I came back from a rare weekend away to find an e-mail from e-bay to tell me that my selling account had been hacked and they had stopped the fraud. I went ape as I have memory and confusion problems and also had had a rubbish weekend. Some joker had hacked my account, listed 4 items to the tune of £4400. I had been charged loads of money for listing them and some idiots had bid on them. My dear computer literate daughter managed to sort it all out but I actually feel as if I have been violated. However, it now turns out that it is much bigger than I thought, several sellers have had this happen to them and the fact that e-bay picked up on it before I did must mean that they have been watching listings. So far three lots of fees have been refunded but what a pain having to redo passwords etc. Ones name isn’t sacred and I have learnt that you must find a very unusual password in order for this not to happen.

I used to use the same password for everything, but then I told somebody my password (STUPID) and felt paranoid, so I changed them all and used a random combination of numbers and letters on most of them. Just close your eyes, and hit the keyboard about 7 times, and open them. That’s your new password.

Geeze, Selkie, I am sorry that had to happen to you! It really sucks when that happens and I understand why you would feel violated! Damn the bum who did it to you! It’s damned inconvenient!

I’m so sorry to hear about that Selkie. It’s hard to beat a determined hacker and even random choices for passwords can be decoded by someone persistent enough.

Any unwanted intrusion feels like a violation, whether or not you are actually harmed in addition. If someone breaks into my house or car, I feel violated even if they don’t steal anything.

I hope you get things sorted securely soon.
