Dublin OH Irish Festival

Hi,

Dan here from Abbottstown, PA. Any kind of get-togethers planned for Chiff & Fipple members at the Dublin (Ohio) Irish Festival in August? My first visit to this festival. Has anyone been going to this festival last year or two? Any open sessions evenings after festival each day? Anyone know if any whistle makers hit this festival or are hitting it this year?

can’t decide. can’t decide. Should I post on this thread or its evil twin?

I went 3 years ago, it seemed like a very popular festival, but I actually found it too crowded for my tastes. However, I didn’t attend any after hours sessions or anything like that (didn’t camp out at the camp grounds), etc…just went to the main public stuff.

I was going to go last year because Mike Burke (Burke whistles) was there. I ended up not going, because it looked like it was going to be very crowded and that parking would be a hassle and I didn’t want to make my wife suffer through it. I may go down this year, especially if Burke will be there.

Is there a web site for the festival? I would appreciate if someone could post it. I live about an hour west of Cols and would very much like to go this year.

Dayna

it’s a VERY crowded festival - upwards of 70,000 over the three days. Last year was a MESS - it was mud everywhere, they kept spreading straw around, so then it was muddy straw everywhere.

There is a tent where there are “jams” going - I wouldn’t necessarily call them sessions. It’s been my experience that the bodhran players outnumber everyone else by about 5 X 1, though.

It’s really a better festival to just sit back and listen to some wonderful music, people watch, and shop (lots of great Celtic and Irish merchandise).

here’s the website:
http://www.dublinirishfestival.org/

(oh - if you get there before 11:00 am, the admission is free!)

Missy

Sounds like the KC, MO Irish festival last year… it was MUCK by mid-day… they tried putting straw down as well, just ended up as shoe-sucking muddy straw.

Ah well, the things we go through for a fun day.

Pray for good weather!!!

Take care,
John

Hi,
We will be there, the Lord willing again with a load of whistles. Dublin is a great Fest because of the family atmosphere there, though it is getting pretty big, as one person said and it did rain last year a bit. The entertainment is always top notch and the stages are intimate and you can get a chance to talk with musicians, since the security doesn’t block things off like they do in Milwaukee.
Hope to see a lot of C&Fers there this year.
Mike

Hey Dayna!
Maybe our whistle group would all like to carivan over to this. It would be fun to have us all go. We’ll have to bring it up at the next meeting. Perhaps we could even volunteer as a group.

Raven

Hey Raven,

If you do this, email me and I may join you. I’d love to do something like that.

Raven,

Great idea! I want to go but did not really want to go by myself.

Dayna

Please keep me in the loop too. John, maybe we could carpool.
Mike

hey Fjohnsharp,

What’s your location? Maybe if you are close you’s like to join our whistle group. We jam on the third Weds. of each month at the Davidson Interpretive Center in Springfield (OH). from 6-8 pm. You can email me if you’re interested and need directions.

Raven

I’m in Aurora, near Cleveland. I think you’re south, aren’t you?

Yes, Springfield is very close to Dayton.

It would still be fun to have someway to identify members of the C&F at this festival. Anyone Got any ideas?

Raven

Hey Ohio Chiffers—

Please include me! I’m in little Cedarville (12 miles south of Springfield) and would be pleased at the very least to know about any gatherings. I have a few friends and students who play trad together, but as you know, in our area there are very few of us.

You can email me at johnmortensen@cedarville.edu

(I rarely or never check PMs…)

We should all buy C&F hats and wear them

I’ll be at the festival this year one way or another.

I have been going for the past 4 or so years. The fest has been getting bigger each year but this year the City of Dublin is revamping the festival a bit to hopefully improve it. I don’t know what all the changes will be.

Yes, it’s big but the amount and level of musical talent at the DIF does bring in a lot of people. It’s a good festival.

If anyone wants to meet up, that would be great.

I also call to folks attention that there is another Celtic Festival in Dayton a week prior to the Dublin Irish festival.

If folks are looking for a smaller festival that is more culturally accurate than the DIF, here you go. I had a chat with the vendor coordinator a month or so ago and she said they strive for cultural relevance and authenticity if possible.

Also, admission to Dayton is free.

As a reference, the Dublin Irish Festival is run by the city of Dublin, whereas the Dayton Celtic Festival is run by local Irish organizations. Makes a difference, IMO.

Come over for Dayton, stay for Dublin. Plenty to see and do in-between!

All the best.

forgot to mention - there is also a Celtic festival in Cincinnati end of September (sounds a lot like the Dayton festival):

Looks like there are some Ohio area folks on the list. I live on the west side of Columbus in Hilliard.

I’d like to call your attention to a newer Yahoo Group called Central Ohio Trad. It’s available at:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/centohiotrad/

Members are from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Lists shows, seisiuns, festivals, etc., primarily in the Columbus/Dayton/Cincinnati area.

There’s a newer seisiun in Dayton on 4th Saturdays - info is on the Yahoo Group.

There’s 3 regular seisiuns in Columbus - Bardic Circle a few times a month (slow players), intermediate on 3rd Fridays sponsored by the Shamrock Club - http://www.shamrockclub.com , and an advanced seisuin on 2nd Fridays.

Bardic Circle has its own Yahoo Group found at:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/bardic_circle/

Take a look at the group, join if you’d like - it’s a great resource.

All the best.
