Dogs vs cats: The great pet showdown

I’m sure that even if I were reduced to snack size, herself wouldn’t eat me because A) I’m me, after all, and B) I probably taste like tobacco.

Here’s a refutation of the generalisation that size means food or not-food:

Man. I could gag for sweetness.

  • Hey, bartender? I definitely need a shot…of insulin.

Well, no…I’m not saying my cats would eat me if I suddenly got small, or they suddenly got big. (The breath, though…let’s not think about that.)
Much the same as the kitties in the pics, above, aren’t consuming their friends.
But we do know that a mountain lion might eat us. It doesn’t know us. We’re fair game. Clearly cats can compartmentalize their behavior on the basis of whether a personal connection has been formed or not.

Both species delight me by the subtle means they often devise for communicating polite (albeit unignorable) requests.
Freddi the dog, when she wishes to come in and go to bed, after I’ve shut the br door, issues gentle “wuffs.” Very quiet, very polite. “wuff.” Every 10 seconds, roughly.
Nick the cat used to wake me, or my more easily roused sister, in the morning via very gentle staccato paw-taps on the face. It was time for breakfast.

Cats are killing machines. They probably are the least discriminating predator on the planet. They would most happily consume a human after they played with it awhile and bit off it’s head.
I also know many a small dog who is the alpha of their family unit, humans and other animals, size is immaterial.

…yeah, the media are full of all those dangerous cats that bite and even kill little children - as well as of all those peacefull wolves and coyotes that would never harm any human being…

Large cats kill over a dozen people in the USA every year. Numbers in the rest of the world are quite high/year. Wolf deaths in NA may historically only be one death in Canada which is still under suspicion. Coyote deaths total are probably around 1-2, small children, who were attacked in their own yards by coyotes being hand fed by their parents. Large cat’s hunting instincts are very different from domestic cat however, they hunt for food, domestic cats hunt to kill.

That’s right. And, without any irony: How many people get killed or seriously injured by dogs every year, and how many by cats? (Though I recently read about a cat that killed it’s owner by sitting on his face while he was sleeping. Probably the revenge for his snoring…). Even when You only compare the numbers of injuries caused by cats compared to those caused by cat-sized dogs (smaller Terriers e.g.), I guess, the cat will look rather peacefull.

However - both are carnivore predators, thus potentially dangerous. The big difference is, that cats are individualists and dogs live in groups. That’s why dogs search for company and are loyal, while cats are usually not. That’s also why dogs usually smell stronger than cats - while hunting, dogs of one group recognize each other from their smell, wheras cats hunt alone, so they need to smell as little as possible to not be smelled by their prey. Many people hate cat’s lack of loyality. As for me, that’s just what I like about them. A well educated dog will always come when You want him to. He needs Your company. My cats only come, if they want to! And when I’m really down, they always come to comfort me. They don’t come because they need me or because they’re loyal, but because they like me…

These cats are drugged!
