Dodgy pipes on Ebay

Just a warning in case one is needed. Dodgy UPs on Ebay uk masquerading as Irish manufacture. They are NOT. They are Pakistani made and utter rubbish. Hope nobody gets stung!

Ah, no link to the item on eBay? I wanted to have a chuckle on my lunch break… Silly paki pipes!

Matt

Uilliam

It would be easier and quicker to list the non Pakistani ‘instruments’

They have been making highland pipes for a very long time and still haven’t got 'em right so what chance do they stand with the UP’s. Anybody idea what they use for a model other than guesswork

AF apparently went out to help Hevia set up and get things rght but guess he was too expensive for our far eastern friends

Uilliam - have sent a complaint to Ebay even though have done it before with no effect. Maybe if they get enough they may take it down and ban the seller but he can just start up again under another name

John

Uilleam, I reported them as you did. Infact I reported them before I listed the pipes here. Yes. I’m laughing my socks off but I’m also aware that it’s a serious matter and I don’t want anyone to get ripped off. Next time mate.

Thought I’d seen them before. The seller purchased them about a month ago for £410! I guess he may of relised they’re a pile of poo, or he genuinely doesn’t know.

From his feedback:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140455894523

It has unfortunately been my experience that ebay doesn’t care in the least that instruments being sold on ebay are not what the seller claims them to be. It is even way worse in the area of violins and bows. At one point I did complain to ebay about all the so-called “Tourte”, “Hill” and other “famous maker” bows being sold that were surely not what they were said to be. I received a canned response letter telling me that if I had evidence that someone’s copyright, etc was being compromised I should alert those individuals of the matter and have them contact ebay. Obviously as those bow makers had been dead for quite a while that would be difficult to do…

So guess it continues to be “buyer beware” on ebay…

this is what the seller says:

JUST AN UPDATE HERE.

I HAVE BEEN ASKED IF THESE ARE GENUINE IRISH PIPES
THE ANSWER IS YES THEY ARE,
I CAN VERYFY THIS,ALSO THE LAST OWNER WHO WAS FROM IRELAND ALSO WILL VERYFY THIS.
THE PIPES ARE GLEN IRELAND NOT IRELAN

Well that settles it then, if it’s Glen Ireland and not Glen Irelan!

I contacted the seller and asked specificallyif the pipes were made in Pakistan. He said that they are Irish pipes NOT Pakistani. He is being very clever to refer to the style of pipes being Irish as opposed to Pakistani. Guess Ebay don’t care too much.

I bidded on those pipes up to £400 and I am a complete novice so I got away with it as they sold for £410 The seller told me and I still have the emails that they were made in Ireland and that his late mother got them for him. He did tell me he met the maker and he came from Newcastle Co Down.

Hi Waller

If you are looking for pipes, there is always an ebay thread on the forum, giving details of uilleann pipes (the non Pakistani ones). If the pipes you are looking at are not in the thread (unless they are newly listed on ebay) it is likely that they are not worth buying.

David

Yes David, I’m sure many Chiffers appreciate your unsung tracking efforts.

Indeed thanks be to the ever watchful Uilleann eyes of Big Davy. you are appreciated by many!

Thanks MTGuru and Ben.

I got into the habit when I was gathering in my own little collection of uillean like objects. So I just continued with it out of interest. The chanter collection is complete (I wanted at least one in each key from Bb to D and got that when Chris Bayley made the C# for me (Nice one Chris  ).

If a set of cheap drones in C comes up though I might forget to post it :smiling_imp:

It is likely that my next purchase will be tenor and baritone regs in B from Kenny McNicholl (when he gets his design to his satisfaction).

David

Hmmm… well we have some more on the listing

here is some more information as to the origin of these vintage pipes

i have just spoken to the person who we purchased them from he ran a music shop he inherited these pipes from his mother in ireland i have called him today and he has furnished me with the relevent details any pipemakers out there, should know this maker i am awaiting his tel no and will list this

these pipes was made in newcastle co down. by a local bag pipe maker in a village called kilkeel. this person was a pipe major who played with general montgomery pipe band in northern ireland. this is the information i have received today and willupdate this listing with this persons tel no

ANOTHER UPDATE HERE

THE MAKERS NAME IS BILLY ROLESTON OF ANNALONG ON THE ROAD TO KILKEEL

Anyone know of this maker - he is not listed on NPU - is there such a place as annalong or Kilkeel in Pakistan

Is this the person importing all these ‘genuine’ irish pipes and passing them off as made for pipers by pipers to catch the unwary :frowning:

Has anyone writen to the seller or ebay and got a reply - all I had back from ebay was a non commital response and the listing is still active so one of the bidders is going to end up with a pile of sticks - luckily for we british there is bonfire night coming up
