Detroit River gathering..NOW WITH CLIPS!

My apologies to all who came to the 2nd Semi-annual Detroit River whistle In on not reporting the this great weekend sooner; but I lost a filling on Sunday night and spent Monday trying to get in to see a dentist. Tuesday it was 75 degress here in Windsor, so I went kayaking on the river all day with a friend!

The Cast: Thurlowe, SteveK, Paul Reid, Eubiedubie and myself were all the ones that came to Windsor.

I was late for my own gathering! When I got to the Nisbet Inn, Thurlowe, Paul and Steve were just starting to go at it!

It didn’t take us long to start, Thurlowe was in amazing form and led us on a merry run of tunes all night long. Eubiedubie joined us around eight o’clock and we picked up speed, playing tune after tune after tune, going around the room.

It was good, there was just the five us in the front room of this quaint inn and the Guinness was flowing! Thurlowe sang and stepped danced to, I sang a song from the East Coast, Paul played some beautiful airs on his pipes, then around the room we went again until almost one in the morning.

Flutes, whistles were passed around so everybody tried everyone one and comparisons were made on the likes and dislikes.

We got applause from the guests in the inn that where there for dinner and questions on how long have we been playing together and are we playing anywhere in Windsor on a regular basis.

And…And … we could have gotten a gig out of it! Some people had come from somewhere and were having drinks, when the bartender came and asked me to speak to these people. One woman who said she was the music co-ordinator for the public school system wanted to know if we were interested in playing in the schools and introducing folk music to the students and it was a paying job. Unfortunately I explained to her that we weren’t all from Windsor and that we just meet twice a year or so. She was disappointed and so was I.

Sunday. I walked back to the Nisbet where I found Thurlowe and SteveK in the back room working on tunes! We left there and went to the Kildare House where we were joined by Paul and Eubiedubie and another three hours of great music, songs, step dancing went on.

We were a small group this time but oh a mighty group and the music was just unbelievable between us.

I would at this time, like to thank Al Gore for inventing the Internet and Dale and Rich for exploiting it to it’s fullest potential, without them this weekend wouldn’t have happened.

I would also like to thank Thurlowe, Paul Reid, SteveK, and Eubiedubie for making the journey to Windsor to make this a weekend that none of us will forget!

Great friends and great music… Thank you all.

Thanks to Mark for arranging things and providing venues for playing. There are actually two pubs in Windsor that are friendly to sessions. Good pubs too. I wish that were the case here.

Steve

Mark, I think we all had a great time and everyone got something out of it. I’ve begun to extract mp3’s from the recordings I made, so it won’t be too long before we have some sound clips. Watch this space!

It was great meeting Paul and seeing Mark, Steve, and Bob again. And pubs were so perfect, both of them poured a great Guinness.

Cara

Wish I could have been there with you guys..wistful sigh Maybe next year? Sounds like you all had a blast!

Wish I could have been there…you all were definetly in my thoughts.
Now, lets have some pictures!!!

Hi Janice, wish you could’ve been here also. Paul took some pictures but it was with regular film and I don’t know if he can post them here. Thurlowe did a whole bunch of recordings and promised to post some sound clips here.

I was talking with the owner of the Kildare House this past Tuesday night and he was amazed at how tight the our group was playing upstairs on Sunday. He told his bartender to turn off all the piped in music in the rest of the pub, so everybody can here the music from upstairs.

Kim Nisbet who owns the B&B that we played and stayed at on Saturday night got two phone calls during the week from customers that where there on that night and wanted to book us for a wedding and fifieth anniversary party. But Kim had to tell them that we were from all over and don’t play regularly together, with sounds of disappointment coming from the inquirers.

If everybody agrees or is interested, we can do it in the early spring after winter travel woes.

Uh oh!

Mark, if there are jobs going wanting down there, contact me.

Steve

I have some images – they’re still in the camera though methinks. I’ll get 'em up when I can. It was very nice meeting you all and I’d love to do it again. It’s be great to get a bunch more out too and make it a whole flock of fipplers (or is that a herd of chiffers, a pride of pipers, a brood of banjos, a bevy of bodhrans, and a gaggle of guitars, fesnyng of fiddlers, a murder of mandolins, a parliament of pianos, a drove of dulcimers, a covey of concertinas, and me.)

By that time I should know a few tunes

All the best!

Hi Paul, it was a strange weekend, the concertina players were in Goderich for their semi-annual gathering, my friend Justin a flute player was coming but his cousin Maeve an all Ireland fiddler appeared in London, Ontario for a concert and workshop. So Justin and two other fiddlers went up to see her. Other whistle players in the area had other commitments.

So it doesn’t seem to be the lead time in organizing such a gathering that is the problem…it’s just serendippity!

No rush for the pictures, I really don’t like looking at myself.

And I will get a tune list off to you soon of the tunes that the slow/fast session I play with at Plunkett’s on Saturday afternoon and when you and your family come down, you can join us.
