Your session photo's.

Just for a change from the ‘Here’s-a-pic-of-my-beautiful-whistle-collection-and-a-reminder-that-I-have-not-got-compulsive-whistle-acquisition-disorder’ posts, and the endless (although informative) debates on the merits of cheap v expensive whistles…and all those pic’s of ‘cuties’ and every other subject that has sprung up on whistlology, how about posting your session pic’s here?
Our local session has dwindled down to almost nothing these days as we have lost musicians through job relocations and people just moving on.
This pic was one of the last sessions we had at the Harp and Shamrock Club in Whyalla, South Australia.
From left to right we have, slightly obscured wearing glasses, Phil ‘the fluter’ Martin having a rest, in green with her back to camera is Suzie skinner (guitar), Suzannah ‘am I playing too loud?’ Jones on flute, Nolene (concertina, whistle, flute and every other instrument under the sun!) Bishop, Iris (go on, beat the crap out of it!) Gaffin on bodhran, Kate (harden up princess!) Tyrell on Fiddle, Thomas (yes, it’s a De Gruchy mandolin) Martin on Mandolin, fiddle and guitar, and lastly me, Tom (what’s the name of that tune again?) Hanna on whistle, flute and guitar. Ah…what memories!
If ever anyone is down this end of the world come in and partake in the best, and that is not an idle boast, (and cheapest) Guinness in Australia, and sit in with us for a bit of a play.

The historic moment: the first meeting of Moscow Irish Session, three monthes ago:

From left to right: Murphy, Bregolas, Breqwas (that’s me), Red-Wad-Shod, Drunken Piper.

And one more month after:

Bregolas, Drunken Piper, Sandy the Piper, Liskin, Katya, Kilya, Kudri, Murhy, Lena McLad, Anutochka, Snowman, Shmyga, Red-Wad-Shod, Tim, GrGr, Skif…

There are plenty of people who attend our session sometimes, but right now students are having another type of session - exam session in universities, so this week only me and Kudri came. That’s sad. But! Solas is coming here soon, and there will be an afterparty after their concert - I’m pretty sure EVERYONE who play irish music will come to that session

…if you ever come to Moscow, don’t forget to drop into Dublin pub some tuesday evening

That’s fantastic breqwas, I had heard of the Dublin pub from a recent ‘New Australian’ who hailed from your part of this small world. Now I have an idea of what to expect if ever I get around to visiting your wee pub!!
Thanks for the video links, I love ‘Castle Kelly’, it has been a long time since I have played it, but I think I will bring it back onto my must play list.
From memory I used to play the set, Castle Kelly / Old Copper plate / Five mile chase.

That’s awesome breqwes. You sound great. I was excited to see the whistle being played in Moscow (I know that sounds silly, but you know what I mean).

Tucson Whistler, that’s not silly at all - and thank you for the whistle, I love it  Some solo: http://ru.youtube.com/watch?v=MnkFTc9wITs

Here’s a quick video of our Long Beach session at the Auld Dubliner last Easter Sunday (pub was nearly empty):

Were the whistles played a Blacktop fipple on a Generation brass tube and an Every whistle on Si Bheag Si Mhor?

Hey Michael,
I hope that is an ice bucket sitting on the floor beside the fiddle player at the start of the video clip and not a spitoon!!!
Great music, thanks, and keep them pics coming people.

We use a champagne bucket as a big tip jar… Works pretty well!

breqwas: That session sounds great! It would be awesome to play with all that people.

By the way.. the name “Drunken Piper” make me laugh, because when I first read it I started to sing in my mind: “What shall we do with the drunken piper?, what shall we do with the drunken piper?..”

LOL, I know, I’m crazy.

Regards,
Martin

Fancypiper, these are Dixon Trad (dixons are very popular here) and my Granite Falls aluminium D.

Bothrops, you’re welcome  Come here and play with us!
BTW, the reel that I’m playing solo is also called “drunken piper”, and the funny thing is that Alexander Karavaev, whose nickname is Drunken Piper, does not know that reel :))

I really like that whistle. That’s my current kitchen whistle. (I think I have at least one whistle in every room.)

I keep every whistle in one room . . . .

I keep Every whistle in my bag, with other three often played whistles.

Nice idea. I’ll see if I can take some photos/videos on sunday.

I have a whistle in every room my wife allows me to play whistle in (i.e. - the basement).

I love the Dixon trad myself. The tuning is wonderful, and it blends well when playing with others.

I’ll have to take a few pics at our next session…but that won’t happen until the 26th.

Fun thread. More pics!

Here’s a shot from last August when our session was playing at Lally’s, a new pub in Cape Coral, FL. We’ve since been voted off the island by the bar flies who want to play the jukebox while they play pool and watch football. The pub missed the chance to draw the local Irish when they couldn’t keep a regular cook and the food suffered.

Anyway, that’s Ian the fiddler’s shoulder, Dave on mandolin, me playing my bodhran (which is what I do when I don’t know the tune - nobody throws things at me), Jeff on bozuki and Hugh the piper messing with one of his electronic practice gizmos.

Hugh brought his pipes in one time and I couldn’t even hear my bodhran and I was whacking it as hard as I could. You’re right, they are not U-pipes.

Only have the same old one handy (and on-line). Still the favourite weekly in the kitchen.

That’s a beautiful photo indeed! I liked it a lot.

Great image Peter!
