Death of a website (WhistleThis)

I’m sorry that my comment here, now deleted, triggered a pile-on of silliness by folks who weren’t even participants in the WhistleThis site. My intent was humor, not ridicule. Cleaned up, with my apologies.

You still have music.

More than anything, that is everything.

I thought I’d speed up the discussion with that one, albeit from an unrelated thread. Actually if you press the Generate Automatic Reply Button at the bottom of the screen repeatedly, the whole thing ends up being locked in about another page.

I came to the site as a beginner (which i still am) right as it was in its decline. (i think two or three songs from the end). I can’t say that I noticed any of the negativity that was apparently there either, but i do know that i liked listening to the tunes, to the different people playing them, and that for good or ill it exposed me to tunes and real people playing them, not just professional recordings, and for those of us living far away from places where sessions go on, in those places that nearly 100 percent of the people we encounter have never heard of irish trad and think that irish music can be summed up by the words river and dance, it was a nice site that seemed to offer a place to learn and grow and have our playing listened to and critiqued by people who at least knew what irish trad was, with their varying degrees of knowledge and expertise. All in all, with all the negativity, criticism, etc, i still wish there were a vibrant site that offered something similar, in concept at least.

Just curious if that has ever been proposed for here on C&F?

Unless I am unaware of rules against it, there’s no reason the Clips and Snips forum can’t be used to ask for/offer critique on a poster’s playing.

It has happened that individuals asked for advise/critique about a tune they recorded and uploaded on a third party site like (for instance http://box.net), and linked to in their post. Usually the response has been very supportive (I believe). But we have not developed a culture of teaching tunes.

But we can’t freely upload to the snips website (http://www.tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/), and can’t delete uploaded tunes. And the Clips and Snips forum is meant to cater only for that site (Discussion forum for the Clips and Snips tune archive), with file uploading controlled by Tony Higgins.

I’ve only done it once myself but Mr. Higgins seemed like a reasonable fellow; I’m sure he’d be willing to remove a clip at the poster’s request. The Clips and Snips forum says that it’s meant to be a dicussion forum for the site and each posting gets its own topic on the forum so it seems to me like it’d work just fine for posting a clip for critique.

Of course, as you said, there’s nothing wrong with doing the same here in the whistle forum if you can host the audio file online yourself and link to it.

Intresting read, thanks to all reply’s.

Hi

Just read this thread, I remember this period well…

My View FWIW

I advocated then, several times and would still advocate that the Clips & Snips was an ideal opportunity to post Clips
The original idea was to merely share clips and people could take from it what they liked..they weren’t put up as
teaching Clips but you could still learn from them

If the tunes are put up for sharing rather than teaching, it provides a much more ameniable platform to encourage participation without animosity.
People could listen to the tunes, and if they wanted to comment on the tunes and were bold enough, they might possibly send a pm to
the tune poster to offer encouragement / ask questions / critique whatever!

It’s also worth noting that Clips & Snips provides a platform to share all kinds of Traditional music not just ITM
so for all the purists out there you may wish to widen your horizon and embrace tunes from other shores or just concentrate
on the Irish tunes..whatever!

Whistlethis was set up as an Irish music website, most if not all of the contributors only wanted to learn ITM
The mentors main bag had to be ITM …in order to get the most authentic examples for people to learn from
and so it came to pass that the mentors examples were put forward but were not allowed any public critique!

Having said that, some of the mentors took steps to remedy that themselves !!

Also bear in mind that more than a few members of Chiff joined whistlethis to support
the website so it wasn’t like people didn’t know each other!!

I’ll admit that I was initially looking forward to sharing Traditional tunes on this site
but when the ITM Purists stamped their mark on it became a lost cause for anyone
wishing to share & learn trad tunes from other shores

I take the view that it would be helpful to anyone new to whistle playing, to encourage them to
listen and try different styles of traditional music to develop thier learning and that
Whistlethis might offer a platform for such an opportunity

This was quickly shouted down by more than a few members so I just left them to get on with it

Around the same period, some unsuspecting newbie happened to give thanks and praise
back on the Chiff Forums for Internet Angels such as Michael and Wynder for providing such
valuable resources in learning authentic ITM

I duly played my part!.. in responding in that thread suffice it to say that Michael and I parted amicably!

Part of my response in that thread however was that Clips & Snips was already available and could be used more
as a platform and opportunity to share & post clips

Personally, as long as Clips & Snips continues to cater for all kinds of Traditional Music..then I’ll be sorted
