I didn’t think it was a huge deal either, I just on a whim posted a link to the rules as a reminder to a newcomer that they are there (as I said before this thread was a bit hot on the heels of the former one). It’s the guys who made it personal and felt they had to have a go at me for it who made a big deal out of it.
The habit that has grown among commercial posters to mark their threads as being commercial posts is a good way to let people know what they are in for, thus avoiding minor irritations for those not interested in advertising.
It’s always those same guys who don’t respect the fact that some of us really, really dislike commercial posts posted in a way that is trying to take advantage of a site which is supposed to be there for knowledge and discussions.
It’s really easy to dismiss everything with a comment like

when you don’t have a clue, and to me those people are as much part of the problem as the people they’re criticizing.

FWIW (2 cents?), I’m generally pretty thin-skinned about these things, missing many of these threads and then saying to myself, “Oh, I guess there was some sort of issue there.” Like it or not, the Board has probably become fairly “commercial” overall - compute the % of new posts that are selling or wanting to buy whistles. However, it’s also difficult to separate this “commercialism” out from just plain old ongoing interest in the instruments and the joy their music brings us.
I sort of (note the term “sort of” which reflects my level of ardor here)draw the line at someone who bombards me personally with e-mails or the like (hasn’t really happened) or who never has anything else to say but hawking the line of merchandise to an extent that violates the Board’s reasonable rules. I can ignore the posts.
Also when we get to know peoples’ posting personalities, you can pretty well tell when someone is “making a big deal;” Peter’s been out of joint about certain things (usually connected to some perhaps misleading statement regarding the music) on occasion; this seemed a mere informational reminder.
Original poster gave a simple apology, didn’t threaten to run away and hide or call us all a bunch of nitwits. IMHO, no big deal.

There are perhaps reasons why a few board members tend to react strongly to commercial postings.
However, it is unlikely that a new maker who is also new to the boards would be aware of them, and I don’t think it’s really reasonable that we expect them to be.
I agree with Dale and PhilO–if there was any problem here it was a pretty minor one, and already taken care of. Ian seems like a pretty reasonable fella–I really doubt he was trying to stir up any hard feelings or irritate any board members.
And, for what it’s worth, I think the offer of a discount for being a board member is a Good Thing.
Just my $.02, probably worth exactly what you paid to read it.

I agree, I think the maker made a honnest mistake, and I think Peter’s answer was a subtle reminder, not at all what you call nuking and flaming. I just couldnt believe how some people would throw jabs after jabs at Peter. I mean, someone thought that Peter shouldnt play the moderator. Fine, we got his point. Is it really useful to have some people jump in and say “yeah, I was about to say the same” and “some people like to be upset” ? I had the feeling we were having a mob bashing in there. I think the right way to react in there is like James. “Nice, whatever gives me a 10% rebate, I like it”. This is a nice way of saying “I don’t think we should see this as commercial posting and even if we do, who cares?” without adding to the mob bashing and without acting like an hypocrite (adding a smiley at the end of a sentence doesn’t transmute a jab into a flower).
So this is what I usually react strongly about, beside commercial posts. If you got something to say, say it loud and don’t be a hipocryte about it.

It’d be an interesting philosophical discussion as to who was the more clever: people who only repeat what others have said, and those who can only repeat themselves over and over.
For what it’s worth, since you seem to have your panties all in a twist over my “jab with a smiley”, I was of the impression that taking the mickey was part of that fine ol’ Irish tradition. If I’d was truly upset about anything, I have certainly had no problem speaking my mind bluntly and clearly in the past, Az. And I’m quite sure that Peter’s got a strong sense of self-esteem and doesn’t need anyone taking up for him from my lighthearted comment.
It’s not like he hasn’t made his own in my direction, either…and I took them about as seriously. I was actually kind of hoping that Peter and I were getting to a stage where we could disagree about things, and occasionally make a little fun without all the drama that you’re dredging up here.
I wasnt taking up for him, I know as well as you do he can do it himself when he wants to. I saw the thread very early but didnt say anything until late, after the thing with Blackhawk was “settled”, would have been bad taste for me to say something then. I just didnt like the way this went, and remember being treated the same way when I’d say something about some whistle maker or shop owner using the board for commercial purpose, so this subject has a very special meaning to me.
