Ciphers and Clips

Not a new topic, but it was derailing another thread.

Over time, I’ve been swayed to the side that favors posting clips. It helps me gain perspective on others’ viewpoints, and keeps me humble in my own. Yes, it might require a thick skin. But if you don’t have one, you probably don’t want to be attempting to make music in the first place.

As for ciphers, I’m undecided. Who knew I’d be still using the boards four years later? Maybe I should have gone with my real name, but now it’s probably best to keep it under wraps, what with having owned up to Rielle’s baby and all.

The trouble with using your real name is that employers can look you up. I would prefer they know as little about me as possible.

You don’t have to have an employer to be here :stuck_out_tongue:

I have one, but I am he. I guess I have that problem nipped in the bud.

No seriously, if you type my real name into a search engine, there are all kinds of things that come up. There’s one forum I participate in that forces you to use your real name, so everything I say there is easy to match up to the real me. Then there are the various web sites I own, so anything I write there is matched up to the real me.

I learned my lesson to never say who I work for online. That only makes the big-wigs call you in and complain about some nit-picky little thing you said.

You have to know that future employers will look you up and if you appear too liberal or too radical or too whatever they don’t like, they aren’t going to hire you. Not that talking about something as boring as flutes will get you in trouble, but I have learned that if I keep my identity less easy to discern, then life is just easier. I only have to worry about what I say on the places where I’ve already breached that.

well, you can never be too paranoid!

I notice you’ve removed yer location.
It is enough to throw off the casual incompetent.

'course with yer first name, city, state …
78 degrees huh

gets a bit circular doesn’t it!

Yep, I hate arguing with myself. :swear:

And then there was the woman on Facebook that had friended her boss months earlier and forgot about it. After a tough day at the job she complained about him in her status post and called him a wanker.

Whoooooops!!!

I believe she was sacked post-haste.

Nothing wrong with having a web alias on forums such as C&F or thesession.org. I think it’s more important what you write than who you are, and on special interest sites I 'm sure people soon suss out who the wankers are, even if they use their real names, or titles such as Dr., or signatures showing their academic credentials.

I doubt that people here have anything to hide or deny by using an alias. Myself I just thought it was fun to have an alias that was the name of a favourite tune I like, and that had references to the air powered instruments I play. I realise it can be unsettling for control freaks but that’s part of the fun

Who the devil am I anyway? Any help…

Another Nanny-Nanny-Boo-Boo from the anonymous playground. How will we control freaks ever go on?

Thanks for advancing the craft.

I’m always careful to keep my identity well-hidden behind a cryptic username.1

You wait, pal; we’ve got the best CIA code-crackers working on your i.d. right now. If and when they ever smoke you out, don’t be surprised to wake up and find yourself on the No-Flute List.

Rob

The best code-crackers?

… oh CIA … that’s all right then …

Fearing I will be found out, I have adjusted my signature to hide my identity…

yep :astonished: that should work

As long as my full name does not appear on the same page next to my post, that is enough obscurity for me.

On one of the sites where my name does appear, I wrote an extensive article on how to backpack happily w/out TP and how to make a device to help women enjoy some of the same advantages men have in that department. You can see why my employment options might be limited. And if any of them thought I was a musician, too? Well then, I’m completely unemployable, right?

I knew I’d roust out some tales worth tellin’!

“As long as my full name does not appear on the same page next to my post, that is enough obscurity for me.” sbfluter.
:astonished: Careful now, or you’ll have the lieutenant after ye sbfluter, you must identify yourself
