I enjoy my feeble attempts at playing far more than I do listening to whistle music, but, last night on BBC4 there was a programme about the recent Celtic Connections 2004 in Glasgow.
I was transfixed by the sight & sounds of Carlos Nunez.
I appreciate now that he is very well in pipe/whistle circles, but I did not know that such playing was possible!
He appeared to play two different wooden whistles during his set - as well as the pipes - they looked fairly low. Anyone know what they might have been?
I agree, very lively stuff indeed… I would rather have heard much more from him than listening to Jim Moray!
The first instrument was a wooden whistle, maybe something similar to the instruments that Jon Swayne and Grinter make. The second was a wooden alto/treble recorder. Couldn’t see any makers names for either.
Lots more Celtic Connections stuff on BBC4 next week I think!
Don’t watch television, so can’t be a lot of help, but was going to say he plays Baroque re*order too.
Also, he spent a lot of his “learning curve” touring with The Chieftains.
Re Jim Moray…even my children think he’s dreadful. He was playing a festival last summer in a marquee. I took the opportunity to go and play all the Hobgoblin whistles out of earshot while settling my toddler for a sleep…and left the rest of them to Jim..smart move or what?!
