Whistling on CBC (Over now)

The piper from Rawlins Cross is playing a low whistle solo with symphony accompaniment on CBC Windsor as I type this. It’s some sort of symphonic + trad instruments work he’s co-composed… nice sounding.

(Editted to change subject line and add) The name of it was MacKinnon’s Brook Suite, I believe. Apparently it’s out on CD already.

I thing I saw that. Sort of a historical piece about the early settlers? The bagpipe/symphony bit made me cringe… Pipes and whistles just don’t seem to go together well with trumpets and cello’s.

They did have on CBC radio, a song by a fellow playing a traditional japanese song on a harmonica accompanied by a gaelic singer doing a lovely lament. Amazingly it worked…

On the subjetc of strange bedfellows, there was another interview the other day with a guy composing tunes for zitar (sp?) and theramin. Not as horrible as you might think. Certainly better than a whistle/clarinet duet I once tried..

Cheers,
