Celtic Connections whistle tutorials

Just a quick word about these events running at the current event in Glasgow (Scotland). Really well organised events for many traditional instruments - I tried a whistle class with Hamish Napier and it was fun. It was a beginners and although I am fairly past the level it was at, it worked well for many who had little practice/experience. Probably 35 people at this hour and a half tuition costing £7.

The interesting thing for me was the difference in teaching style to what I am used to. The class I attend has about 4 other folk who all work with sheet music and are happy doing so - I struggle in class because I am not good at reading music but have some ability for playing by ear. The teaching style therfore leaves me behind during the class and I have to tape the tutor (producing a good rendition) at the time and go home and practice it by listening and working it out. Hamish was not keen on sheet music and advocated playing by ear - although he had been classically trained himself. People learn in so many diefferent ways - I suppose it’s not easy to teach effectively to all the variables in one session!

Celtic Connections is a hoot! Eddie Reader was superb as were Malinky - really enjoyable. Will be back and stay for longer next year.

cheers
