I just wanted to let you know about some adult flute workshops I’ll be running this year across central Scotland, as part of the “TradFolk” series of workshops. The main event is a residential event in Wiston Lodge, near Biggar from 10th-12th May.
However the series kicks off this month with a day workshop in Edinburgh on 23rd March. If you’d like a flyer with more information then please contact me, alternatively you can visit our website or facebook page - details below.
I’ve just had a look at the schedule and I am quite impressed. I have signed up for the May weekend at Wiston Lodge where Calum Stewart will be the guest tutor at the flute workshop.
Are any other chiffers thinking of going?
The expression “adult flute workshop” makes me imagine a room full of naked fluters, or something. Sorry, I’ve been spending too much time on the internet. Carry on …
MTGuru - ha … I’d never read it that way that but now that you’ve pointed it out it does put a different slant on the proceedings!
Rest assured one won’t be forced to remove any layers of clothing..
Flutesoftheforest - Glad you’ve booked up, I look forward to meeting you.
I was at this last year, and am signed-up for this year as well.
A good balance of tuition, sessions, tea drinking and table tennis … and the odd beer
or two (I’d never hear of “killer table tennis” before that weekend …)
Just wanted to let folk know there are now just a few places (1 or 2) remaining for the weekend at Wiston. So if you’re thinking of coming book soon!
There’s been a slight change in the programme since the flyers were printed - unfortunately Calum Stewart is no longer available but I’m delighted that George Ormiston will be the guest tutor this year. As well as being a superb maker George is an excellent player, with a diverse range of influences and repertoire. Along with delivering a workshop focusing on Scottish music he will also lead a discussion on the history of the flute in Scottish music, going back to its roots before the folk revival. There will also be time for a presentation on flute maintenance and a brief look at the building process. I’m sure George’s input will be very interesting and a great addition to the weekend.
The workshops run from approx 5.30pm on Friday 10th May, finishing about 4pm on Sunday 12th. If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch.
just wanted to say thanks to Peter and the rest of the Wiston posse for a great series of flute workshops over the weekend; down in the Borders of Scotland. I thoroughly enjoyed myself - and it was great to meet and put faces to names that post here too.
Nice talking to and playing tunes with you all.
Hopefully we’ll all meet again (don’t know where; don’t know when) … unless it’s at Mugdock in August when I’m hoping I’ll be able to get down and participate.
Anyway - thanks again for making it a nice weekend one and all.
I’d just like to echo what Chris said above. Many thanks to Peter, Louise and Lynsey for organising such an enjoyable musical and sociable weekend.
For any of the flute class here, I’ve been chasing up the reel “The Man From Glengarry” which George Ormiston was teaching. I knew I had it on recordings somewhere, and most notably, it’s played by Iain MacInnes on his excellent recording “Tryst”, recorded in 1999. The sleeve notes have this to say :
“David Mather, composer of “The Man From Glengarry”, was a Londoner who won the prestigious Inverness Gold Medal in 1899, and later emigrated to North America. He ended his days working for the Anaconda Mining Company in Montana. Like many pipers of his time he was both an excellent musician and a good dancer”.
Could I also add my thanks for a brilliant weekend of music.
I must also thank all concerned for being so welcoming to a sassenach who entered your midst, even though he did attempt to ply you with songs!!!
Looking forward to future events.
Cheers
Martin
Flute (and fiddle) workshops from 10 - 4 at Mugdock Country Park, near Milngavie, Glasgow on Saturday (24th Aug). After the workshops we have a great evening in store starting with a relaxed slow session, then a buffet dinner, then an intimate concert from a great flute/fiddle duet - Roisin Anne Hughes and Particia McArdle - followed by more tunes in the bar.
The plan is something like this:
10-4pm Workshops
4pm Slow session
6pm Group Meal
7.30pm Patricia McArdle & Roisin Anne Hughes in concert
8.30pm Session
If you can’t make the workshops but fancy the concert and session then tickets are available on the night for £5, doors 7pm.
My final flute workshop this year as part of the “TradFolk” series of flute/fiddle workshops takes place next Saturday (23rd Nov) in Glasgow. If you’re interested, please visit http://www.peter-webster.co.uk/tradfolk for more info.
