Calling all Whistlers!

Some of you have heard about my latest antics. I am producing a day-long Celtic Music Festival and Ceilidh in Lead, South Dakota (it’s only three miles up the hill, down around Mt. Bald and Ugly)September 27th, 2003. This is a first here, and I’ll be working with a bunch of local (good) musicians to put together a “House Band.” Mow many of these folks have never ever played Celtic or Irish Trad before. So I fugure the best that can hapeen is that we’ll come up with a unique Black Hills Fusion, and at worst, we’ll have a ball trying. The morning will be given over to the whistle give-a-way and workshops for people over eight years of age, the afternoon will be a concert in the local High School auditorium, and the evening will be a ceilidh in a local pub. I’ve been very successful at finding national and international sponsors for this event, and was wondering how it would feel for Chiff and Fipple folks feel about sponsorship, especially with our bunch of international crazies. I think I e-mailed Dale asking him how he felt, but I may have missed that. My first fund raiser is a raffle, and I’m trying to get into the good graces of the Arts Council so I can platform some grants off their 501(C)3 orgaization. We are culturally deprived here, even thought Lead had a pipe band until 1936, and there’s a ton of McWhatever’s buried in St. Ambrose Cemetery here in Deadwood. So, folks, Im open. I’d love to have you all here in Deadwood (no danger of getting arrested for busking) at least in spirit. Any suggestions, any comments are welcome.

Oh, I’d LOVE to come. . .what’s your nearest airport? How big isn’t your livingroom? Does the local pub serve Guinness?

Well, my living room is small, but we’ve got innkeepers with BIG hearts and the local pub will be serving Guinnesss for the occasion! Oh, and Tyg, you’ll have to learn to ride quarter horses with western saddles! Nearest airport is Rapid City!

Anna, after getting up on my instructors horse three times post-break, I proved I could do it, then pretty much gave up horsebackriding.

Sandy Perceval, upon hearing this, congratulated me, then quoted Rudyard Kipling as saying horses are “dangerous at both ends and damned uncomfortable in the middle”.

Time was when I was fairly accomplished at western style reining and seat. Rode a wonderful reiner in Dallas called Dink who would slide stop, spin on a dime, back up from Dallas to Fort Worth and back again. I was young and not as breakable then.

How far from airport to Deadwood, Lead or wherever? Is September still camping weather in your neck of the woods?

The airport is 55 miles from Deadwood, and it’s still camping weather, unless we have an early blizzard, but there hasn’t been one in Deadwood since I’ve been back. Meanwhile, the livingroom floor is there. for more information you can go here:http://www.deadwood.com/

Just a note that there are special restrictions on non-profit organizations regarding raffles.

Here are California’s as an example:

"Beginning July 1, 2001, charities and certain other private nonprofit organizations may conduct raffles to raise funds for beneficial or charitable purposes in California.

This exception to the general constitutional prohibition against lotteries requires that at least 90 percent of the gross receipts from these raffles go directly to beneficial or charitable purposes in California.

Additionally, a nonprofit organization, unless specifically exempted, must register with the Attorney General’s Registry of Charitable Trusts prior to conducting the raffle and file financial disclosure reports on each raffle event. See Raffle Forms below.

What organizations qualify and how the raffles must be conducted are governed by Penal Code section 320.5, which was added by
Senate Bill 639 (McPherson, Chapter 778, Stats. of 2000). See STATUTES & REGULATIONS below."

Thanks Kevin, that’s why I am being nice to the local arts council so I can platform offa them, they are a NFP! Other than that, I’m used to being an outlaw here in Deadwood.
