Burnt pumpkins

A lady came to our door with her trick-or-treating kids and said that the smell of the food we were cooking inside smelled delicious. I told her that it was just the smell of my daughter Hannah’s pumpkin top burning from the candle.

There’s something about this time of year - the cold weather, the smell of jack o’lanterns cooking from a single candle, all the Snickers one can eat. Right now I have pumpkin seeds soaking in a solution of salt water and garlic. Tonight the jack o’lanterns get cut into strips and put into the refrigerator. Tomorrow they get put into the oven to soften so the skins can be removed. They’ll probably make about 13 pies. The kids and my wife are still going door to door.

They say Christmas only comes but once a year. I think it comes many times each year.

I feel the same as you!

Happy Fall!

We only had one trick-or-treater, but it may have been because of the weather. We went from record-breaking heat last week to snow falling hour after hour for the last two days! It’s that heavy, wet first-snow-of-the-year snow that breaks the branches on trees if you don’t go out and shake it off. But it’s beautiful and I’ll be out taking photos of the bright red rosehips on the still-green rosebush covered in snow.

And yes, my thoughts turn to comfort food: homemade chicken noodle soup with big, thick homemade noodes, clam chowder…YUM!
