I am listening to the soundtrack of “Brave” as I write this posting, which means I enjoyed the movie so much I just had to download the soundtrack immediately upon returning home from seeing the movie on opening day. Thought I’d share how much I enjoyed the movie, and the music. It features a lot of Scottish music in both style and instruments, and I felt it was very authentic and stirring, adding a great element to the storyline. No, there isn’t a huge amount of whistle or bagpipes, but there’s enough to make it interesting to listen to.
I’ve already downloaded sheet music to a song that someone amazingly transcribed and uploaded to share - one of the major songs, Touch the Sky. Here’s the link if you are interested:
I highly recommend Julie Fowlis’ music - a wonderful Gaelic singer, and superb whistle-player. If this film makes more people aware of her and her music, no one deserves it more.
Yes, I have all that information, thank you . . . but it still doesn’t tell you who plays the whistle on the instrumental pieces as part of the orchestra, the pieces by Patrick Doyle. I would doubt it is Julie Fowlis.
I did read in the credits that it was not Tony Hinnigan that did the whistles… I looked for him. Thanks for Matheu’s name - I will look him up. I am really enjoying hearing more of Julie Fowlis, too, having not heard of her before now.
From what I see on Matheu’s website, he plays violin & guitar. I see he was a soloist on the Brave soundtrack, but I didn’t see anything saying he played whistles on them. Did I miss it?

And just to top it off, she’s an excellent highland piper. Is there no end to how amazing she is? I too bought the soundtrack, and I already have all of Julie Fowlis’ CD’s.
