I’ll add more information to this thread as I can prepare it.
It’s worth mentioning, I’ve been able to strengthen the lowest notes without sacrificing the birdlike upper register, so some of the discussion in an earlier thread will not be up to date.
If so Mike, they will look exactly like Blackhead-Nickel tube Feadogs with a Blackbird name-sticker on them. Wouldn’t it be more relevant to wonder how it sounds?
Ok, I’m working on the mental image, but a picture would still be appreciated.
Of course, and I’m greatful for the posts by you and MT and the sound clips of the prototypes. But, I’m increasingly of the opinion that how a whistle sounds is as much due to how it’s played as its inherent tonal qualities. Hence, some people can make Generations sing, whereas I can’t. Sound is much more subjective than image too, and influenced by the acoustics of the room and the recording equipment.
If you don’t want a nickel tube, just replace it with a brass Generation or brass Feadog tube. Or just put a piece of cellophane tape along the back of the tube.
Yes, we experimented with this and found that the Blackbird head works very nicely on a variety of different 1/2 inch tubes from Feadóg, Generation, and Waltons. So you can mix and match to customize your own sound and material preferences.
Jerry has asked me to do a few “official” sound clips, which should be ready by the end of the week.
This is very cool, I may have to get one after a multi-year whistle embargo. I just rediscovered a forgotten Jerry-tweaked feadog and have been having a blast playing it lately. I’d given away a great feadog and this one fills the gap perfectly.
Besides the SR-71 tie-in, I can think of other great advertising opportunities. Custom graphics depicting, for example, a “Blackbird singing in the dead of night”…or “Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie”…
This raises a question I’m not sure how to deal with.
My mouse logo is central to my business identity, especially since Ralph II was instrumental (pun is accidental, I swear) to many of the breakthroughs here at the Global Penny Whistle Tweaking Research and Production Consortium (GPWTR&PC) Headquarters, and Ralph I, Gus and Mouse kept me company during so many long nights as I slaved over the tweaking table. (Deermouse, meadow mouse/vole, meadow mouse/vole, and deermouse in order of mention. Deermice are more stylish than voles, but a vole will sit on his haunches and make eye contact while he nibbles whatever snack you’ve provided.)
However, before long, I will be going into mass production with two whistles that are named Blackbird and Mellow Dog. Hmmm … .
