beginner question

Hi All,
I’ve recently realized I can acheive "g"octave2 by playing "g"octave1 with “g” finger only, and a little bit of pressure.
Is this a common thing with chanters? Is it going to create a bad habit?
I’ve only been learning for about 6months, I don’t have a whole lota luck with octave2, so I don’t feel like starting off on the wrong foot.
While I’m here, I found a version of O’ sullivans March with 4 parts, does anybody play it?I’ve only ever heard played with the first 2.Just curious.
Thanks,
War.

No need to worry. my chanter jumps to the 2nd octave when i lift only one of the G fingers. It’s a good way to get up there, and you’ll also need to do that anyway to ‘vent’ up to the 2nd octave A and B. Also, combining a 1 fingered G with 2 fingered G in a 2nd octave G roll gives a slight crescendo effect volume wise during the roll, made even better by lifting the chanter off the knee half way through. Try this - play 2nd octave G with only one finger up, cut with the A finger and at the same time open 2nd G finger, then tap F# finger while lifting chanter off knee to get a nice flowing roll on G.

Thanks for the help DavidG.Good to know that it’s acceptable practice.
