I came across this link:
http://www.beckytaylor.info/

Pictures and CD sound samples on the website.
Never heard of her.
Looks like she composes a fair bit of original stuff.
Some of the MP3’s seem to skip when I play them.
Nice…but not my cup of tea. This stuff should appeal to the younger new agey traditionalists out there.
Yeah, but she could probably run rings around a lot of us from this board
(and I imagine she’s better looking than most of us to boot).
Is that Becky with Sean Potts?? Old photo?
So, Glands, from a few mp3 bits on a website you can judge who or what Becky is?
When it comes to UP, she plays in a style I once heard referred to as ‘art piping’, something along the lines of Sean Potts. She is a fine NSP player, and could give Tickell a run for her money.
That’s Sean.
What’s “art piping”?
Definition please…

Boyd,
It is merely a term that Pete Hunter used. His playing was also reminiscent of Sean Potts (as they all seemed to hang out together a lot back then). It is that very tappy, fluttery, crisp, lots of double tapped rolls etc., I tend to think it sounds like the tune is one long roooollllll. Bet that helps

Thanx…
when you hear a new piping label its like hearing a new diagnosis…human psychology seems to mean that you always think “shit, that’s probably me” [for piping] or “shit, that’s what I’ve suffered from all these years” [medical condition].
Now I can see that I’m not an “art-piper” I can relax a bit. ![]()
I am, in fact, more of a “fart-piper” than an “art-piper” …
…that’s the same as a “shit-piper” but lacking solidity/substance.
B
And I am a tart piper, which is a bit like a cross between an art piper and a tight piper, but morally corrupt

Becky is a very good uilleann piper, she can also play the “pure drop” stuff better than most. She plays an old Crowley and has access to some interesting old sticks, Coyne, Harrington etc. The stuff on her site is just one aspect of her playing. She’d play rings around most of yer “pipers” in the US that’s for sure when it comes to the traditional material
This is a lady who plays the UPs, NSPs, fiddle, low whistle, and is both young and vivacious. I have only two questions: 1) Is she married? 2) If not would she like to be?!
And you lot are debating style?! ![]()
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You pipers are very strange.
Havent you noticed? There doesn’t have to be a REASON for a debate. Name ANY topic and there’ll be at least 4 opposing opinions on it.

Snoogie, I have to totaly disagree with you on that one…there’s at least six to seven opposing thoughts, or was it 5?
You’re totally wrong on that Joseph…

…story of my life. ![]()
I’d just like to say at this point that I have no opinion on the matter. ![]()

Some of you got your britches in a wad over what I said. May you successfully dig them out of your behinds today.
I did not say she was not a great piper. I did not say she was such either. Thee is no doubt she has talent.
I implied that, based on what she presented on her site, the style did not suit my tastes.
The tracks I listened to reminded me of the “stuff” Lunasa and a lot of other new bands are doing…stuff that is so far removed that it is difficult to see it as traditional in the true sense of the word. Not my cup of tea… that’s all.
Why do people take offense when a man renders his opinion on this board?
Good grief!
"Why do people take offense when a man renders his opinion on this board? "Blands.
Chill out dude
- most of us are uilleann pipers here and that’s the way some of us are, very touchy and high strung - the least little thing can set us off and we start to rave and shout. Probably has to do with reeds and it being Friday too ![]()
Lewis, it’s not what you say, but how you say it…
I kinda like the spark you set and come back later to cool things down ![]()
Really? You think John McSherry and Cillian Vallely aren’t traditional enough? Interesteing. While they don’t play in the same style as the older pipers from past decades all the time, I never thought of their playing as anything fringe at all. Now our dear Mr. Spillane on the other hand… ![]()
