Battle Royale

My daughter recommended this to me and I really enjoyed it; we’re both sick people who share many movie and literature tastes, some a might esoteric or cultish. (Ok, how many of you saw and enjoyed Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai; or El Topo, for example?) Many people think Kingi Fukasaku’s Battle Royale was banned in the USA, but it was just not released here; you can’t get it at Blockbuster but you can at NetFlix or Amazon. It has an element of Lord of the Flies, but goes beyond that. It can be disturbingly violent but has a lot to say, and not directly. Generally, it’s about the downfall of Japanese economy and the passing of a law that results in a randomly chosen school class being sent to an island where they are forced to duke it out until the last one standing survives and gets to leave the island. Yeah, I know; sounds stupid, but it really is better than it sounds and does require a bit of suspension of disbelief. It’s a Japanese movie that comes with Japanese, Korean and English subtitles.

Both.

Loved both of them, for many different reasons.

Before me now, courtesy of Netflix, is Azumi.

I am looking forward to it..but not tonight.

A few nights ago I watched “Y tu mama tambien”..and I was blown away.

Devastated by the beauty of rural Mexico, before the plotline managed to find me..great.

A few hours before that I watched, for the third or fourth time, “Amores Perros”…

That realy gutted me and made me sit up and scream WTF…again.

One for the Tarintino fans…assuming that they don’t have dogs.

Superb flick..

Slan,
D.

If you like that kind of stuff I can recommend Ichi The Killer. It’s got some really gruesome scenes in it but is well worth a look if you enjoy violent japanese films.

I’ll check it out; but I don’t really like gratuitous violence, only that which is a natural part of the context. UFC is cool; a hockey game that breaks out during a fight is not.

Been watching more movies like the oldboy trilogy lately. I found the story line original and the camerawork beautiful but they may be considered a bit on the violent side.

Looking forward to when “Tetsuo: The Iron Man” and “Franz Kafka’s it’s a Wonderful Life” makes it’s way down the que perhaps after “Chicken Run”
I’ll have to look up a few of the above titles.

I’ll never understand why hockey players are never charged with assault.
