Bamboo whistles

Have a friend that has a bamboo whistle that cracked .. and he says that happens more often than not. Is there any way to keep them from cracking .. or repair them if they do?

Thanks,

Jim

well, not having experience with this but someone recommended using superglue and then put tension on it (clamp) so you can try that…I have a bamboo flute here from that person that’s proof the cracking happened more than just once.
and as they say, the bamboo should have burned holes in, not drilled, and be bound to prevent the cracking…no idea which maker that bamboo whistle is from, your friend could contact the maker eventually?

I had a bunch of bamboo flutes that I brought back from Taiwan, and they all ended up cracking–some within weeks, some lasting a few years. So did the bamboo neck on my giant Taiwanese Opera erhu. (And so did several cheap guitars that I bought there.)

Several of these were bound in a couple of spots, but that wasn’t enough to save them. Knowing that now, if I ever got any more, I might try adding extra binding with some epoxy-soaked thread.

Mine split too badly to repair.

that’s too bad…maybe next time you need a bamboo flute/ whistle, choose a reputable maker, these are much better quality AND not to forget the service .

Bamboo, like any wood like material must be seasoned properly, and when seasoned sucks up moisture much faster than wood, so some way of slowing down moisture exchange is essential.
