My folk flute made out of Mopane cracked
. I have no idea how. I am in NC right now, and it has two cracks; one one the left side of the holes, and the other on the right, by the head piece. It hasn’t cracked all the way through, they are just surface cracks it looks like. Do you think weather had anything to do with it? Who would be a great person to go to to fix cracks. Thanks.
Bummer. Did you contact the maker yet? He would be the best person to discuss this issue with right now.
Definitely contact Casey. He might charge you a bit since it’s a FF, but he knows exactly how to fix cracks with wood he’s treated. I’d bet he’d be very reasonable, but it may take some time.
Sorry about the unwelcome surprise.
Jason
Thanks guys, I will contact him about the problem.
Sounds like the cracks were caused from “hoop stress” this happens when the inside of the flute gets saturated, and the outside of the flute is dry. The inside pressure expands, and when it meets the threshold of the wood’s hardness, the outside will crack. If you are in a dry envoroment, such as a heated home, best to keep the whole flute hydrated, to equal the humidity inside and outside the flute, and to oil and swab out moisture regularly.
FYI
Thanks Jon for that, I realize that what you are saying was the problem. I played it a lot, and it is very cold here. I oil it about twice a month, but now I know I have to oil it and swab it more. Casey told me how to fix it.
What exactly did Casey tell you to do?
Take a toothpick with superglue, and fill in the cracks with it. Make sure the headjoint is off until it is dry. He said that should work.
