bamboo repair

I know this has probably been asked before but I can’t run a successful search to save my life.

Anyway, I have a G bamboo flute I’ve had for about a year and when I first got it it had a small crack down the bottom/side and some clear nail polish pretty much fixed it but it’s been in storage for about a while and I took it out today and found it got crushed, there is a new crack about 3" long, and the original crack now goes a good halfway up the flute, though it still has its shape and still plays, but with a buzz on the lower notes from the bamboo rattling.

I don’t want to just paint it with nail polish again because the damage is more severe this time and I was going to use possibly wood glue, but bamboo isn’t really wood, would that work? Should I use some sort of tape first, to make the seal extra strong, or will that affecting tuning?

I really don’t know what to do.

Thanks, people.

Hey Cran; I use epoxy myself and draw the crack together with hose clamps untill set. Then I rap the hell out of the flute with hemp twine on the end and between all the finger holes and just below the embouchuer hole. 5 minute epoxy is fine. You do have to spred the crack carefully but epoxy will also fill any gaps that are there. Good luck.
