Wow. It’s too bad that wasn’t visible in real time to the human eye. It’s gorgeous.
Sorry, I can’t resist putting in a little plug. (The Chamber of Commerce ought to pay me, but they don’t.) If you want to see the aurora borealis for real, Fairbanks Alaska is the place to be.* Researchers from all over the world come here to study the aurora. My favorite thing about the aurora, though, is when I’m driving home late at night after sharing some great music with my friends, and suddenly I see the aurora rippling across the sky. Life doesn’t get much better than that.

*For those who might actually plan to visit, you obviously can’t come in the SUMMER when most tourists do if your goal is to see the aurora. It’s still there, but in the summer it’s daylight all the time, so you can’t see the aurora or the stars. I’d recommend a visit in early to mid-March, when the days are longer and warmer but there’s still plenty of real dark at night, AND you can see the World Ice Art Championships, too. (You can go to http://www.icealaska.com/ and click on Past Events to see some pictures, but they are better in person.)
