Driving home, midnight
Tunes still playing in my head
Northern lights swirling
Ahh . . . life in Alaska is good!

What a wonderful haiku, Sarah ![]()
The other night I was driving home from practice (we’ve got a little group together that is going to be performing on Saturday morning) and there was someone in the ditch, so I stopped to help. When I got out, I noticed that the entire sky was filled with the aurora. It was like God had drapped a blanket over the earth! It was really beautiful. Poor lady in the ditch couldn’t get her car out - it was high centered - but at least she had a view while waiting for the tow truck.

You make me think of the opposite experience: Anchorage, June 1999, lurching back to my hotel at 1:00 am after a very nice session at Blondie’s, three or four drinks drunk, and the sun high in the sky.
More Alaskan Haiku…
Last summer we made a bonzai run from California to the Arctic Circle in a 27’ 1988 RV named Bubba. Two days into the trip my handheld GPS broke. Not a problem until we got further north:
Compass is worthless
The sun rolls around the sky
I think we are lost
or how about
The sun never sets
I think I’m going insane
The locals all are
my favorite
Next gas many miles
We find the gas station closed
We are really screwed
or
Arctic solitude
Almost hit by packed tour bus
What’s up with the trees?
Okay, so maybe my haiku is a little rusty! I loved Alaska and plan on going again…next time we’ll replace the 27 foot RV named Bubba with a plane ticket and a rental car ![]()
Cheers,
Eric
Yeah, you’ve got us pegged there!
Arctic solitude

What’s up with the trees?
Hey, are you dissing our trees? The little black spruce, known affectionately as bog spruce, that look like drunken pipe cleaners because they’re growing on permafrost that’s really close to the surface? Those trees are older than your grandparents, so have a little respect! You might not look your best either if you had to stand with your feet in ice water all summer. ![]()
And finally, I must point out, if you’re in Alaska in an RV it’s hard to get lost because THERE AREN’T THAT MANY ROADS. (Although I personally have an uncanny talent for getting lost, and can accomplish it virtually anywhere!) ![]()
(And in case there’s any doubt here, I’m just teasing, and I love your haiku.)
Eric, definitely look me up the next time you come North! There’s a really friendly bunch of people who play music here, and they’re always happy to have visitors drop in.
Sarah
I thought of another one…
They are everywhere
In my bed, my food, my hair
Moose sure poop a lot

Well, you certainly have me there, Sarah. it would be difficult indeed to get lost in Alaska. There’s the road to Dead Horse, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Seward and Homer. If you’re not on one of those roads, you ain’t in Alaska!

Is that what they are…Black Spruce? We crossed over from the Yukon in the middle of the night and found some dirt road to turn down to camp for the night. When we woke up in the morning and went outside, I felt like a huge giant towering above the treetops. I took photos of the bonsai forest to show the folks at home, but without any reference; it looks just like a regular forest. When I show the pictures to people I have to stress that the tallest tree is about 10 feet. I have a walking stick that I carved from one of those Black Spruces…I used the entire tree…it is 5 feet tall, and when I counted the growth rings, it was 25 years old! Don’t worry, I didn’t chop the tree down…it was felled courtesy of Alyeska and their giant weed-whackers.
My road trip up there was an incredible experience. Preconceived notions were shattered and new unimaginable wonders discovered. Next time I go…and there WILL be a next time I will be sure to look you up! Someday I want to see the northern lights for myself!!
Enjoy the sun!
Eric
