It is the Manicouagan Impact Crater in northern Canada.

I knew about the crater beforehand… but I admit to clicking on the image to get the correct spelling for Manicouagan. 
The aurora is one thing I miss living in southern Canada. Even people in the northern US have a better chance of seeing it than I do here.
And I don’t care what anyone says - it does too make a hissing sparking noise when it fills the sky. You just need a cold enough, dry enough, still enough night to hear it clearly.

I have heard as well, on a trip with my Dad to Great Slave Lake a long, long time ago now…
We are around 51 degrees north here in Cornwall so we don’t often get auroras, but at the end of October 2003 we had a spectacular display. This is a great site for keeping an eye on whether a display is due wherever you are in the northern hemisphere: http://www.gi.alaska.edu/cgi-bin/predict.cgi
