sorry to interrupt… I could probably sit down with the weekenders at Pete’s on College Ave or wherever and think they were totally nice but when it came to their reasons for voting think they were being a jerk. I realize this sounds like I’m resorting to name calling and I am. I don’t think this is entirely justified or even honerable, I’m just admitting to doing it. I know someone who is voting republican and they are a good friend but as far as their choice and reasons for voting in the upcoming election I tell them ‘you’re a jerk, or stupid.’ --Just my own opinion.
So, in essence, if someone disagrees with your viewpoints, they are “jerks?” Not trying to start something, just trying to understand…for example, if you believed that we should only wear purple socks on Thursdays in a month with a full moon, and I disagreed and held the opinion that they only should be worn on Fridays in a month that starts with the letter “J”, and then we both voted for said candidates based on those opinions, would I then be a “jerk” because I didn’t agree with your opinion? Or would I merely be a jerk because I voted for someone based on their position on the wearing of purple socks? And if the latter is indeed the reason, wouldn’t you also be a “jerk” because you also voted for someone based on their opinion on the wearing of purple socks? I really am trying to understand your position here…
Izzarina, There are instances when I haven’t felt this way about other people’s voting choices. In this election though that is what I think. - If someone wants to turn around and say “ok, you’re a jerk too for being for the other guy” that’s only their opinion, as it is mine toward them. - I think this way because of what I see as widespread hipocrisy and stupidity as it pertains to this election and most of the issues, health care, foreign policy, deficit reduction, to name three.
Thank you, Cranberry. Kind words much appreciated.
I guess there’s a general human tendency to suppose
something’s defective in people who disagree with us.
I do think, honestly, that one of the fringe benefits
of being a conservative is that I’m somewhat less
inclined to think this than when I was a liberal. Best
Yes, but a person expressing their opinions and viewpoints through a vote for a certain candidate does not make them a “jerk” per se, unless of course that vote is somehow detrimental toward you. It could perhaps make them misguided or not terribly prudent, but I don’t see how you could consider them to be a “jerk”. I do understand that this is your opinion, and you have a right to it, but I don’t see the reasoning behind such word usage. Just my opinion, as misguided as it may be
I’m having a really hard time deciding if I’ve stumbled into “Wonderland” and should be looking for a white hare … or is it a Shakespeare reading of “Much Ado” about nothing?
Obviously, Heather, you can’t be a jerk – however, everyone knows purple socks are only worn on Saturdays! (Don’t you love how the political fallout lands in every thread?)
My sister got the same sort of recording from Barry Switzer, but for the Democratic candidate. Had this memorable line, “If he was a liberal, would I be endorsing him?”
Now, Judy, I do realize that there are those (few as it may be) people who believe that tis far better to wear purple socks on saturdays, but you must understand that this is a 3rd party issue. By voting for a 3rd party, you are in essence, dividing the votes of the main party cadidate with which you share many views with. The end result of this can only mean that the candidate in which you hold NO common groud will be elected. In other words, you’d be casting your vote for the jerk who only likes to wear his purple socks on Wednesdays in months with a full moon. What kind of a plan is that?
Political fallout…I think you’re right. It does seem to be landing in every thread. I’ve forgotten what the original topic was now for this thread…was it how Cran Flu to Sealand rather than swam? I’m lost…
