Anyone know this Air???

Does anyone know the haunting air from the funeral procession in Waking Ned Devine? THe whistle player played it at Ned’s funeral march.

Thanks

And while we’re at it. . .anyone able to figure out what kind of whistle he is(nt) playing?

Umm, I haven’t seen this movie for a long time but I think it was “The Parting Glass” or a variation thereof.

BTW, IMO it was a great film even though it wasn’t filmed in Ireland (it was filmed on the Isle of Man)

I think it was L.E. McCullough?

Dave.

One of my favourite movies! (I have the Cd, the video and the DVD…(a bit excessive, I know ) . During the funeral procession the music is credited on the liner notes as “Lux Eterna, My Eternal Friend”. Words by Shaun Davey and Kirk Jones.
“The Parting Glass” is played in the final scene as they stand on the cliffs making a toast to Ned Divine. So I am not sure which song it is you are wondering about.
For the Parting Glass, credit is given as Poem: Kirk Jones. other than that it says all music composed by Shaun Davey.

I don’t know the name of the tune, but as to the question regarding what kind of whistle, I’m fairly sure it was a Susato. I was told that by someone once, and when I saw the film again it certainly looked like one.

My impression is that it might have been a burke composite. but a susato might be right, at least for the touch of authenticity. I don’t think there are many burkes played in Ireland. I could be wrong.

Great movie!

Picking nits I know, but I believe it was an old Clarke original. It would certainly fit with the ‘authenticity’ of the film more than a Susato would as well, but I could be wrong. I’ve just watched my video of Ned, and it looks very much to be a black conical bore, not a cylendrical bore.

Could be wrong though I guess.

I’ve looked at that funeral scene in Ned Devine many times and though I’m almost positive it’s a SUSATO I’m still not absolutely certain. I am certain it is NOT a clarke original. Can see
enough detail to eliminate that possibility.

My 2 cents worth

Lizzie, thank-you for correcting me. Like I said, I haven’t seen it in a while and I don’t own a copy on which I could check. It is also one of my favourite movies!

The melody for “The Parting Glass” that they sang in “Waking Ned Devine” wasn’t the one I learned from the Clancy Brothers records. To me, it sounded like the melody from “Mo Guile Mear” (excuse mispellings) with the words from “The Parting Glass.” Did anyone else notice that?
