So in honour of last night’s arrival of my Howard low D, I stuck on a DVD of the film “Waking Ned Devine” so I could jam along with the soundtrack. So for anyone who’s seen this, there’s a scene with a funeral cortege led by a lone whistler who’s playing a beautiful-looking little whistle. Does anyone know what kind of whistle it is?

No, it was something fancier. Looked like it was either wood or plastic – dark coloured – and jointed.
I saw the movie, and i remember the whistle playing, but at the time i thought it was a Clarke. Like you say, something black. I didn’t get a good look at it. Maybe a Susato?
Maybe someone here has the DVD and could check it out?

“SUSATO” end of story! Forgive me for the self promotion…

I just saw the very end of this great little movie this afternoon; I thought the credits referred to “McSherry” as the pipe and whistle player?

John McSherry is the piper and whistle player on the soundtrack, though it isn’t him in the movie itself (on screen) according to popular opinion. For those of you who don’t know much about John, he was also the founding piper in Lúnasa and has several solo albums out that are VERY worth grabbing!
God bless him, he’s also someone with some of the most unfortunate hair of anyone I know in Itrad! Next to Paddy Moloney’s old chops from back in the 70’s that is
