Does anyone know of a recording of this air? I have the dots and a midi but I’d like to hear how a real person plays it.
Thanks,
Mike
Best recording of it I’ve ever heard of it was Padraig Mac Mathuna’s album, Blas Na Meala. It’s an Ossian CD that features some lovely, lovely solo uilleann piping and small ensemble playing. He does play a B set so you’ll need a B whistle or pitch shifting software to play along with it.
Look here.

The Dubliners have a version on “Original Dubliners”… The Clancy Brothers do it as well, maybe on “Come Fill Your Glass”?
I heard one version once that I absolutely loved, but have no idea who it was.
Someday I’ll find it! ![]()

There’s a beautiful version in the soundtrack of Waking Ned Devine.
Thankee one and all!

glauber! That was it!!! I’m so excited, I’m doing a jig of joy… I finally know who sang the version I like so much.
It was indeed Shaun Davey. There is a clip HERE about halfway down the page.
A very happy,
Andrea
It’s also been recorded by the Voice Squad. Great name for a group!
That’s always been kind of a family anthem for the Clancy Brothers…they close all their concerts with it, and it’s on several of their albums. When I made that recording for Tin Whistle Tunes, it was based on the Clancy Brothers’ rendition, which was the only exposure I’d had to the tune.
It’s a lovely one, isn’t it? Rather wistful.

Roger had it before I could get it in, Voice Squad most definitely.
Some two years a go one of the Clancy brothers died and the assembled muscians at the grave sang and played The Parting Glass, Finbar Furey playing the whistle. It was all over the news at the time but documetnary about the Clancys which was shown some months ago on RTE had that moment again.
Funbar Furey’s version must have been stunning-I saw him play a couple of years ago,and his whistle playing was sublime (his pipes were pretty good too!).
The ‘Voice squad’ version is good,I first heard the Dubliners’ version, and,if I’m not mistaken, didn’t Sean MacGowan record a version? (I hope it’s a long time before his parting glass!).
Beautiful, beautiful song.
I love the Voice Squad, too.
Sinéad O’Connor does a version of The Parting Glass on her Sean Nós Nua cd.
There is a group on the So.Cal. Rennaisance Faire scene called the Poxy Boggards. They do a spectacular version of Parting Glass on one of their CDs, (can’t recall which one just now, perhaps Barley Legal).
Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard this song played badly.
