I downloaded the file to my Mac. QuickTime player gives me the following error message: Couldn’t open the file “mahone.wav” because the sound information was in a bad or damaged format.
It downloaded fine for me. I don’t recognize the tune myself, so maybe it’s still completely out of tune, but to me it was definitely an improvement in tuning over JimP’s (maybe there’s something wrong with Jim’s “pipes”?).
Most people are having trouble opening the WAV because it has a nonstandard sampling rate (11KHz).
The recording level was set a little too hot, and it clipped (distorted) in a couple of places. This is more noticeable in the MP3 than in the WAV. The places where it happens you hear a little “rasp” in the sound. That’s not from the instrument, just digital distortion.
Sorry some folks are having trouble downloading my pipe tune. Thanks to Glauber for reposting it as an mp3.
To get the pipe to play in tune, I have to check it on my tuner and make sure both of the D’s are right, by tightening or loosening the reed/disphram. This has to be done quite often.
The tune is one I made up called Mahone’s Jig. It’s difficult to find real tunes because of the limited range of the pipe.
Feel free to do whatever you want with the MP3. I’ll leave it up until i need the space, which probably won’t be soon.
To convert the file, i loaded it into Audacity, then used “export as wav” to get it into a more standard wav file, then used “lame -mm -V5” to convert to mp3. The -V5 was just a guess, but it worked well.
