American Heritage Music

I like to go to “Rondevous”,“Colonial” and “Civil War” faires as well as “Renaissance faires”. Playing Celtic music all the time is quite dull, even though Celtic music is my favorite.

With the resurgence of American Patriotism, e.g. 9-11, classical American tunes are begining to emerge from the dust again. Here are some sheet music source pages…can you add to this list?

Nothing is impossible! We just haven’t learned how to do it yet!

Tuckahoe Music P.O. Box 146, Bremo Bluff, VA 23022 has published several books of music from the civil war period. Foremost among these are banjo tutors from around the civil war era. These contain banjo tunes and some songs of the period.

The book Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife contains lots of fife marches collected in Pennsylvania. I haven’t looked at the book for a long time but many of these must date to the civil war.

One should also take a look at the Kitchen Musician series by Sara Johnson at:

While cast as dulcimer books, they are, in general, useable for most solo instruments… Good books.

It isn’t sheet music, but no list of historic American music compilations (also the music of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England) is complete without Nielsen’s The Contemplator site

http://www.contemplator.com/

There are midis, histories and lyrics for literally hundreds of folk and historic tunes. The site can be both addictive and endlessly entertaining.

Wow. I’d like to thank you all for posting some downright outstanding music resource pages. Thanks!

Anyone know if this company has a web site? I have exhauseted my Google tricks, but can’t find one. In the meantime I have sent them a letter for more information.

My last dealings with Tuckahoe were several years ago. They didn’t even have email at that time. I hope they’re still in business.

Thanks Steve… We shall see. I’ll post an address if they respond.

You could try this phone # 804-842-3573.

Gosh, I’m really on top of things. Duh. I completely forgot a couple of places that have civil war related music and banjo material.
