Can anyone suggest a source of American style tunes?
I love that swing that’s so recognisable and …and..
well I hope you know what I’m talking about.
Tunes like Waitin’ for the Federals and artists like Fiddlin’ Johnny..
I wish I knew a bit more to tell you but then it’s YOUR brains I need to pick in order to lift this veil of ignorance.
Not bliss in this case.
Cheers.
James.
‘Waiting for the Federals’ is a common old-time American fiddle tune. One place you can start getting acquainted with this style of American music is: www.oldtimeherald.org (check the links tab for lots of good sites).
Hey James,
I have Walter Sweet’s “Complete Music for Fife and Drums” and enjoy many of the tunes.

Fife music is written the same as Flute and sounds fine, to me, untransposed.
I had a copy of Walter’s other boodk “Fifers Delight” several years ago. While I liked many of the tunes, I found the handwritten scores hard to read.
I too would like to find other sources of Americana music! ![]()
Fiddlin’ Johnny Carson’s yer man.
Apart from that, what you want will likely be trading under the names Old Time music, or Texas-Style fiddling. I’m not sure where he got Waiting for the Federales, but IIRC Aly Bain has acknowleged learning tunes from Texas Fiddling giant Benny Thomasson.
This un’s a staple 'round these-here parts. 'Sgot Irish/Scottish/Cape Breton stuff too, but lots of old-timey tunes mixed in.

(how ya doin’
?)
Benny Thomasson’s the DUDE. We were just playing Midnight on the Water at a gig last weekend. It’s lovely paired with Margaret’s Waltz in A.
Here’s some deeper Benny Thomasson info, plus some links to other players like Clayton McMichen, etc.

(my Larry’s an ex-old-timey fiddler and I play in a Bluegrass crossover band so I get an earful)
here’s a site with dots for a lot of old timey standards http://www.math.ufl.edu/~rcrew/tunebook/Tunebook.html a lot of them fall nicely on the flute. Don
I’ll second Cathy’s choice on “The Fiddler’s Fake Book”. It’s an outstanding source for the material I believe you’re looking for.
Hey,
You can get this on Ebay, too. Just type in Fiddler’s Fake in the Ebay search box. There are 3 available right now - that is, if you are interested, of course.
Thanks so much y’awll.
The Fiddlers Fake book is winging it’s way to me as i type ( all the way from THE AMAZON ..of all places) and have the dots on my computer for cracking tunes like .. Cincinatti rag, The Coon and the Possum and Caterpillar sittin’ on a Sweet Potato Vine.
Hope that second one doesn’t have poisonous undertones.
Blimey! These tunes have to be explored just for the names.
Hey Cathhy! Hope life’s peachy with you.
Me and (the) Terry McGee is gettin’ on great. It’s a wonderfull flute.
Just spent Saturday learning some Swedish tunes. What an ethnical repertoir I’d have if I could just dispense with work and concentrate on the flute.
Are there any favourites worty of suggestion out there?
Again.Thankyou all.
James.
I don’t know if you’re interested in Civil War music, but my friend Bobby Horton’s an authority. He also has other Americana music at:
