Military Music

I neither want to sound too brutal nor too pacifistic, but does someone of you folks know a good compilation (or single tunes) of military music? That sounds really great on the TW! The Uninted States Marines’ Hymn for example sounds great and is easiliy to learn. (Even I was able to play it just by listening to it a few times!) Of course I’m talking of the Irish/Scottish/or maybe American branch.
Somehow the TW belongs to the glorious world of Pipes&Drums.

You might find some music that would interest you in Samual Bayard’s book Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife. The fife marches are were collected in Pennsylvania but are likely descended from Irish, Scottish and English originals. There are even a couple of Sousaesque marches.

You can also find a good deal of music in George Bruce and Daniel Emmett’s Fife and Drum Instructor. I may not have the actual title correctly, because it’s usually referred to as Bruce and Emmett, or just B&E. It was published in 1861 as a military fife and drum manual, complete with the camp duty. Those who know a little musical history will recognize Dan Emmett as the man who gave us Dixie, and that’s a clue to the sorts of music to be found in the collection. Emmett was a virtuoso fifer, and many, if not most, of the tunes are quite difficult. You may be interested to discover that the composer’s version of Dixie is somewhat different from the version familiar today.

Other fife and drum manuals include those by Howe, and by Keach, Burditt, and Cassidy. Most of these are available from sutlers who cater to the reenactment crowd, such as Fall Creek Sutlery. Here’s their URL:
