Advice on transferring to PC from MD please (warning: techno

Hi techies! In an attempt to get a high-quality sound clip I recorded some tunes on my minidisc and then loaded them up to my PC via a line-in to the soundcard and Goldwave.

Although there is no noise on the MD recordings, once saved on the computer there is a constant low-level background noise of hissy whistling beasties.

Any ideas on where this might be coming from and how to eliminate it, preferably without using noise-reduction or filtering in Goldwave? I’m trying to record the completely un-retouched sound of a particular whistle.

Thanks
Steve

What soundcard do you have? If it is the factory one that is probably the cause. The line-inmic jack on lower end sound cards are “noisy”. A soundcard with an optical in would be ideal. Check out minidisc.org for some good recommendations.

trying to get out of 149th place. Too bad the last three boards don’t count!

That would be ideal except most MD players don’t have optical out, only optical in (unless if you have a high end home deck or something like that). I use a regular stereo cable. I’ve got a soundblaster Audigy card and it works great.

Mark’s right…
Whenever you change from digital to analog, you already introduce a bit of noise to the recording. The cable, the connectors, and the line-in jack all can (and generally do) add to the problem. This explains the reason why true audiophiles will shell out an extra five grand for equipment that promises an improvement in sound quality that I’ll never be able to discern.

As for how to minimize the effect, I’d say look for a MD player and a sound card that both support 2-way optical transfer, if such a beast exists.

The Audigy card has optical in and out. $200 last I checked.

Thanks everyone. Evidently I need a better soundcard.
