I borrowed a minidisc recorder for the L.E.McC. workshop last night. Since I don’t have a minidisc recorder or player myself – still looking for a good used one at an affordable price – I need to get the stuff off the minidisc onto a CD. I do have a CD burner. I bought a cable that goes from the headphone output on the minidisc player to the mic input on the computer.
I know other people here have done this. What software did you use? Any shareware? I’ll eventually want to do some editing, but at the moment I’ll be content just to get it on the CD so I can return the minidisc recorder.

Thanks – I downloaded goldwave and will try it. I’m bummed – the sniper software I tried to used didn’t submit a bid and I lost out on a minidisc recorder.
Use Goldwave to capture the data from the minidisc player. Then you need to cut it into individual high quality wav files which will then be burned as tracks onto the cd. You can make it one big track if you want to but then you lose ability to easily go back and forth to different tunes.
I think the audio software hates me . I tried Sound Forge, which came with some other software I bought a while ago, then Audacity. With an audio cable running from the headphone jack on the minidisc to the mic in on the PC, and my headphones plugged into the headphone jack on the PC, I can hear everything fine. But the software can’t. When I hit record I get . . . nothing. I’ve changed every setting I can find. Nada.
I know mic in works bc there’s another piece of software that came with the computer that will record. But it’s probably some shareware or something (it’s the school’s computer, not my own) – it won’t save.
Are there any audio or computer gurus out there who can tell me what I’m doing wrong?
While I am not familiar with the software you are using. Other software packages - Cakewalk - NTrack - Melody Assistant have hardware configuration menus where you have to specify the input source. You could also try acccesing your soundcards controls (often by double clicking the speaker icon at the bottom right of the screen.) and going into options, then properties, then selecting recording and check the volume settings there. Hope this helps a little.
I’ll try a demo version of cakewalk, see if that works. I’ve already reset all the soundcard controls that I can find. I do think it has something to do with the program, since the one that does work (which turns out to be MusicMatch Jukebox) lets me select mic in as a menu option and the others don’t. I don’t like what people on download.com say about musicmatch, though, so I don’t want to register that (not to mention, that’s not my computer and I don’t need to pay for software for the school .

Well, I did find a way. The demo version of Cakewalk doesn’t let you save, so that wouldn’t do it. I asked around and found someone with a registered copy of MusicMatch. I was right that the problem with the version on the school’s machine is that it is also the demo and you have to have a registered copy to export in WAV format. That would do it easily, though.
But what I ended up doing was (finally) finding a minidisc record on e-bay for a price I can pay. This means that, at least for now, I don’t have to worry about moving all of this to CD.
Please post anything you learn about it, though. This is just a temporary reprieve for me .
