100% O.T. Saddam Hussein

I often ignore these sorts of current-events threads, but this subject is bound to come up. The television news is reporting that British P. M. Tony Blair has declared that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has been arrested. They are further reporting that D. N. A. tests are in process.

Hope this doesn’t turn out to be another Bush-on-the-aircraft carrier-declaring-victory events… they do seem pretty sure this time though

let’s hope it’s all over now and peace at last!

Over no just a new chapter, now comes the court case and lots of tv coverage and all the in’s n out’s  :moreevil: :smiling_imp:  :boggle: :stuck_out_tongue:  :sunglasses:  :astonished: :frowning:

And lets hope that Bush has satisfyed his thirst for blood, oil and new ground to exploit for awhile and we might even see a bit of peace in the future.

wishful and positive thinking does work if enough people do it

DNA tests are back and it’s him. People are dancing in the streets of Iraq on TV. Saddam Insane’s reign of terror is over forever.

Hope this doesn’t turn out to be another Bush-on-the-aircraft carrier-declaring-victory events… they do seem pretty sure this time though

C’mon, Paul, it’s a day to be happy. I’m gonna play that new mopane Busman whistle to celebrate.

Yes, much celebration in Iraq. People saying this is their
new beginning. Plainly a giant step in
the right direction.

This is indeed a great day for the Iraqi people.
I just hope that the new government will be alright. Obviosly Bush is going to place some US friendly people in charge. I just hope it wont turn out to be another boot licking dictator, like the ones they have suported in so many other contries. But I haven’t followed this whole storie, mabey they have already desided the system for ruling.
I doubt that USA is going to allow a public election, in case the people wote wrong and put someone in power that wont let McDonalds, Coca Cola and the others exploit, oh sorry -rebuild- the country, and wont let USA get the profit from the countrys oil supply.

Sadly, one has to wonder…who is likely to take his place now? In the history of civilization the human speices has never been absent of radical and often dangerous minds. The capture of Mr. Hussein is indeed a step towards peace in Iraq and the middle east; though I assume it is a very guarded step. Let’s pray we’ve accomplished something positive at the end of the day. I wonder how many of the families at home who have lost one of the over 500 coalition deaths in Iraq - or the hundreds more innocent Iraqi’s who have suffered during the occupation.

I’ve always supported the effort to remove this man from power, but I’ve been forced to question more than once: At what cost?

Breathing a very cautious sigh of relief…

Bush says the goal is to install a democracy, and there’s no way to back out of that. This is the reason we have the heebie-jeebies now, because we can’t guarantee a friendly government, or prevent the formation of a theocracy.

But regardless, there will be a democracy in Iraq.

Caj

That sounds good Caj.
Now I*M starting to hope that the people vote right.
No Jihadish muslim fanatic, no more mad dictators,
no communist cause the only thing that will happen is another war and a dictator in power when the dust settles.

Now that I have seen confirmation, I am VERY happy indeed!

I don’t think we should be lulled into thinking this is the end of anything at all. It certainly is not a bad thing, but certainly not the end of anything…Remember, Saddam was a brutal dictator, but just like so many others that we won’t go after because it’s too difficult and maybe they don’t have oil. The one, the only real target made so by virtue of real terrorist and ongoing actions directly against us and others is Osama Bin Laden…still out there somewhere.
There will always be someone and we need to do a lot more than just track down individuals.

I may be opening a can of worms by saying this, but I hope we can somehow find our way beyond the huge division that exists today between our Judeo-Christian culture and Islamic cultures around the world.

I believe there’s a tendency to oversimplify our perception of the “other side” and lump them all together with labels like “Islamofascism.”

Although the extremists have been powerful and unfortunately, supported by governments such as our friends the Saudis, they by no means represent the mainstream of Islamic society. If you care to look into it, you’ll find that an alliance was struck between the first Saudi rulers (put in place by the British, who wanted to maintain their influence there) and clerics of the Wahibist sect, who then promoted their own extreme, anti-western version of Islam in schools funded by the Saudis and set up throughout the Muslim world. As I said, they became powerful, but they do not represent what authentic Islam is about.

Islam is a beautiful religion, full of profound spiritual truth and full of teachings about compassion, service and respect for all humanity. It is a shame for the world that the actions of a powerful minority have so deeply tainted the world’s appreciation for a great religious tradition.

Best wishes,
Jerry

No, this not the end. In every generation there rises a brutal dicatorship that seeks to destroy people. Syria for instance is probably a greater terrorism threat than Iraq was - they also have a greater military power than Iraq.

I’m curious as to what Bush’s next move will be, he has completed the work his father started. Iraq was a two-sided coin, #1 - you have there terrorism, mass graves, killing thousands in Iran, etc. #2 - you have the mysterious Bush Oil connection.
Then there is the election year that draws a big question mark in how political leaders will react. I predict a real knock down dragging in the muck political season ahead.

Look, I vote republican but I do also see a strange fondness that the Bush family has for going after Iraq and oil.
To me, it’s interesting how this keeps occuring in history. Take the Civil war, the north didn’t get into it to stop slavery - it was all about economics. I put my faith in a higher power to see these political leaders get a hook in their mouth to bring about things that need be done.
The allies in WWII, things came together against Germany but not because of their crimes against humanity - it started out because of economics.
I see Bush as one who has this connection with oil that has been used to change the events of history, for the good. Being used to change history doesn’t make you good or bad, after all Balaams Donkey was used to change history.

do you think that iraq’s new democracy will have seperation of church and state?

Saddam looks like he needs a Ba’ath

Too funny.

A fellow was quoted (with name) as saying, and I paraphrase: “We’ve lost our only hope, and now we’re stuck with the Americans.” He works as a security guard hired by coalition forces! Let’s not make any hasty assumptions for the future.
