Your favorite session sets to play?

I really enjoy it when someone here mentions a particular tune, etc. that they are playing. I often try to find it, listen to it, whatever, and then discover a tune I really like. I am hoping that this topic will elicit some more of these! I’m particularly interested in two or three tunes that you play together as a set, as I’m trying to venture out beyond just learning individual tunes.

So, what are your favorite session sets to play at the moment? I’m currently enjoying learning Hammy Hamilton’s jig “The Woodcock” and “Kerfunten.”

Please share!

Thanks, Jeanie

Go to;

lots of groupings of tunes and sound files as well.

Huh – the only “Thank God We’re Surrounded by Water” I know is a common Newfoundland song. Certainly doesn’t sound like a Fahey tune. Is there a story here, or just a coincidence?

Sets on my mind these days:
O’Rourke’s / Wild Irishman
Twilight in Portroe / Pride of Cluinte
Slow Road to East China / Pink Ribbon Reel

Fahey doesn’t name his compositions. Many people play them, and they all appear as “Paddy Fahey’s” on different albums. In Ireland, people have been giving these tunes names to help differentiate them. I picked up this tune name from one of the Kane Sisters’ albums, who use the tune names for Fahey’s tunes that are popular in Ireland.

My favorite sets:

Tell Her I Am/Winnie Hayes

Humours of Trim/Roaring Barmaid/Sliabh Russell

Davy Maguire’s/Scotch Mary

Dance of the Honeybees/Drowsy Maggie/Mountain Road/Tam Lin (on guitar :slight_smile:)

You mean to tell me that in addition to recording 16 tunes they just call (Paddy) Fahey’s, they recorded other Fahey tunes that have names stuck to them now?! I’m gobsmacked.

I’m afraid that is beyond my control. Read the CD jackets for their explanations. :smiley:
