Some good session sets?

Hey all,

I have finally reached the point where I feel more confident in my playing. I can hit the notes, my tone is ok and I can add basic ornamentation.

Now, I would like to learn some session sets. What songs go together nicely and aren’t too difficult?

I don’t know many tunes yet. The Lilting Banshee, Harvest Home, Tell Her I Am, McMahon’s Reel, Out on The Ocean, Humours of Drinagh and just started working on Morrison’s Jig… thats about it that I have memorised.

If you know sets that incorporate any of these tunes, that would be great… I’d have a headstart on the set! :laughing:

If it feels good – do it.

There are no hard and fast rules about what goes with what.
Fool around with different tunes and keys and when you come up with a combination that you like,then you have a set.

different sessions or areas have different ways of grouping tunes all that matters is that you enjoy what you are doing.
Now,off you go and assemble the travers set.

I know there are no rules and such but I am curious what people already play.

I have no real skill for putting together sets yet. I imagine that, as I am exposed to more ITM music and sets, that skill will develop. :smiley:

Some sets that I have used in various, uh, settings:

Rolling Wave → Out on the Ocean (and sometimes back to rolling wave again)

Ballydesmond* #3 → Terry Teehan’s Polka

Harvest Home → Boys of Bluehill → Off to California

Blackthorn Stick → Donnybrook Fair → Kesh Jig

Dennis Murphy’s Slide → Connie Walsh’s Slide

Ballydesmond* #1 → Ballydesmond* #2

Currently trying to think of what jig might go nicely after Maid on the Green..

The set:

Rolling Wave → Blackthorn Stick → Out on the Ocean

is nice/unique because each tune ends on the starting note for the next tune.

It is a reel.

Hmmm… I think I only know Maid Behind the Bar, Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel, Maid in the Cherry Tree, Wise Maid, Sligo Maids, and Maids of Mt Cisco – all reels – but I may be forgetting something…

I was taught a “Maid ON the Cherry Tree”…I wonder if it is the same tune? Can you email me a clip, and I’ll do the same for mine?
