One I am trying to put together:
The girl who broke my heart
Old Hag you’ve killed me
I buried my wife and danced on her grave
For the “themesong” approach ![]()
The Silver Spear : Maid Behind the Bar is a popular set.
Practicing the other day, I ran through Dunmore Lasses/Silver Spear/Maid Behind the Bar.
I thought Dunmore Lasses into Silver Spear worked rather well, and it seems to
fill out the set nicely, to my ear, anyway.
A couple other common sets would be,
Off to California / Boys of Bluehill (Hornpipes)
Out on the Ocean / The Old Favorite (Jigs)
And when you want a realllly long reel, you can put the Bucks of Oranmore
together with the Foxhunter’s Reel.
I wonder if there isn’t a list of popular sets on theSession.org or somewhere.
You can always create sets. Just run one tune right into another and see how
it sounds. If it sounds good, call it a set.
I have several books in pdf format that would probably work well for starting up a session. I play out of them often for fun. If you want I can send them to you when I get home from work.
Here are a couple more:
Polkas:
Mickey Chewing Bubblegume (I can’t recall it’s other name)/Britches full of stitches
Jigs:
Lark in the Morning/Battering Ram
Eric
There are two session books out on the web that might help. Both are organize in sets.
Both are in PDF format for easy down load and printing. They might be an excellent starting point.
Hope this helps you …[/list]
Those are good ones. The others I like are the “Top 100” collection split into two books. I consider those to be the handiest, though I like the O’Brian collection best. The O’Brian set seems to be a bit tougher though.
Ah ha. Found it.

Thanks for those tunebooks. I knew the O’Brien sets but I didn’t the others. The Blarney Stone Pub tune book looks to be very good, I’ll play a bit tomorrow. Thanks so much.
Thanks Chris, but I know what is a set and how to make them
It’s only that I’m a bit lazy these days ![]()
