Oh that’s funny! Takes me back to the days when I lived in Boulder, CO. and all the local wanna be metal bands rented rehersal space at the same storage facility. The place was at one end of town (right near the local strip joint, of course) and when you’d come up on the place at night, you’d hear 6-10 bands like that going all at once, funny as hell. I rented a unit there where I had my giant, Neil Peart size drumset so I could practice without getting tossed out of my apartment, but to be honest, I got nearly as much entertainment out of listening to the other bands murder tunes like Final Countdown, not that it was a good song to begin with. You’d be surprised at just how many different ways there are to butcher a single tune
Okay, I’m not sure how many people are going to get this one, but it is hilarious. Colin, Brigitte, do NOT be drinking anything when you play this, or you’ll end up a mess:
I don’t seem to quite understand what he is playing. Is it an electronic bagpipe? There is no air going in it, right? Or am I missing something. I hope I will not be too embarrassed by the answer!
Cynth, yes, you are correct. It is an electronic instrument that mimics several types of bagpipe, including UPs. It is also a MIDI controller, so when you finally give up pretending to play bagpipes, you can use it to drive your other synths.
Thanks for asking that Cynth. When I first saw it, I thought- What kinda goose it that thing? Then, I figured as much- no mouthpiece, no belows, only an electric cord.
I thought it was pretty well done, better than most quasi-trad-pop I hear. The MIDI pipes didn’t sound that bad to me, it sounds like they used samples of real pipes, and it works pretty well with straight-ahead playing like that. I don’t know how they’d work with the slides, barks, pops, etc., of Uilleann pipes in full flight.
Duuuuuuude man, you need to listen to some better quasi-trad-pop…
Some discussion of Hevia’s electric pipes has occasionally surfaced on the UP forum. Apparently, they can do popping and tight fingering, etc, although I’ve never actually heard a set up close, so I have no way of knowing just how they actually sound. But what I wanna know is, will they choke and squeal like a real set of pipes?
Yes he can do the popping, sliding and all the stuff in that model. That’s not a toy. Can’t remember, but I was shocked when I was told. They have samples of all bagpipes with their respective fingerings, tunings, you even can sound as low whistle, saxophon, whatever.
My personal opinion is that he covers a bigger market than mere traditional music lovers with the thing.
